Tierpark

The Monkey Boys!

.

This afternoon I was browsing my folders of stock images, looking for something to play with, when I came across this photograph Shannon (delicate_flower) took of Mike (cualdo) and me with the statue of this enormous gorilla.

I can remember quite clearly she forced us, mostly because I thought we’d look silly and it’s hell getting Mike to pose for any pictures at all.

Shannon was visiting Mike in Munich at the time (this was March 2002) and one day we just decided to head to the Tierpark (the Zoo). Good times. Makes me all nostalgic and wishing those crazy days lasted longer.

Anyway, I found something Shannon wrote for my now-defunct journal beingHERE, and I thought it’d be interesting to look back two years.

I would have never remembered the giant black dog from hell that nearly got eaten by the giant sealion otherwise. Like I said, good times.

Shannon’s account of drunken peacocks, amorous turtles and the Monkey Who Hated Me.
Me and Mike woke up that morning (I can’t remember which day it was now, Sunday or Monday maybe?) and it was all bright and sunny outside. I stepped out onto Mike’s stairwell and checked the weather. I needed a light jacket and told Mike this (mind you I told him I needed a jacket, not that he necessarily needed one :P ). I believe we then proceeded to message Kenny to tell him when to meet us. We met at some stop, and then went off to the Tierpark.
It was so cool because even before we got in, we saw cool swans and ducks under the bridge. The lady selling tickets didn’t seem to give a shit that we said we were students. I wonder if we were 40 and said that if we still could have gotten in? ;) There were lots of cool birds there. I got to feed some ducks and stuff. That must be the life, swim around with a bunch of your friends and get fed by dumb touristy people. I could deal with that. Oh yeah and this was the day Kenny got his haircut too. :) I felt so honored that I could see him when he was changing his hair style. :)

I don’t remember a lot of the first stuff we saw, but I do remember that it was super warm out, and Mike yelled at me for telling him to bring his coat (which as I pointed out earlier, I simply stated that I had intended on bringing my own coat :P ) I remember we saw some cool bird that sat with its legs bended all backwards and stuff. That was pretty neat. We saw flamingoes too. I like the fact that birds can be such cool colors.

Then of course the highlight of “Monkey Boy’s” day. The monkeys. I made Kenny and Mike pose like the statue of the monkey outside the monkey house. It turned out quite well. Then we went inside a place that was supposed to be like Kenny’s homeland, but Kenny proceeded to inform me that mist was not constantly sprayed from little sprayers in walls to maintain a humid environment and that Malaysia was definitely not this humid normally. ;) I do believe that if we hadn’t literally dragged Mike out of that place, he would have stayed there ALL day.And don’t get me wrong, as much as I love animals and monkeys and the like, there’s only so long I could be in that humid place.

I liked the fact that it was spring because all the babies were born and looking so cute and stuff. :) There were sooo many different kinds of monkeys too. It was pretty neat. There was one that really didn’t like Kenny at all for some reason. I don’t know why, he’s a really cool guy. ;)

Then we went outside and saw more monkeys, but these were little playful squirrel monkeys. They were so cute, and it kicked ass when one of them somehow got across the water and was crawling around on the railing. I guess Mike said that some kid pulled the poor thing’s tail and needless to say got pretty upset. I personally got tired of the monkeys and went to see the giraffes and kangaroos. The Giraffes were definitely my favorite animal to see that day.

Then we (finally) left the monkeys and went on to see other animals. We went into another overly humid room with lots of birds, and I guess Mike said he had to help some old woman chase a bird back inside the birdhouse. I’m sure that would have been a sight to see. We also saw this crazy peacock wandering around the beer garden. He obviously wanted to get wasted. I also saw these two sea turtles going at it like rabbits. (how ironic huh? :P ) It’s hard to go at it like rabbits when you are trying to have sex while carrying your house on your back. That poor guy must have been so frustrated. It also didn’t help that the female turtle kept moving around. The poor dude couldn’t get into position.

We went and saw some cool cats, and there was this big black dog, that Kenny at first thought was the panther in the cage he looked at, and had proceeded to get out. Thankfully that wasn’t the case. I like big kitties. We also saw a red panda. There weren’t the “normal” pandas that I was used to seeing at the zoo, but I think it was pretty cool. We also saw the COOLEST sea lion.

Ok there were two really cool sea lions. One was a little one named Molly who did all sorts of neat tricks like jumping through hoops, fetching rings and balls and kissed children and terrified babies. Then there was this super huge one, that we don’t know what he was named, but he scared the crap out of this really huge dog, and it was really funny. I’m not good at describing things like this, so I leave that to Kenny and Mike to describe the massive size of this thing. It was so cool.

We also got to see goats and cows and lambs and horses and zebras and elephants and sooo many other cool animals. We didn’t get to see the bears though. The zoo people have this clever way of kicking people out by putting all the animals away. Those clever bastards. So by the time we got to the bear exhibit, it was bare. (that’s for all you pun lovers out there :P ) We also got to see an aardvark and rhinos, and some other really cool stuff that I don’t really know what they were. There weren’t any hippos though. That was very sad. OOOh the penguins were cool too. Alligators and triangle fish.

I know that I could have gone to a zoo in America, but I have no regrets about spending my day there with two really awesome guys. :D Maybe they remember more than me, but I’d say this is pretty good considering how long ago it was. OOOH there was a really cool big long snake. The reptile house was really spiffy as well. The only thing I couldn’t bring myself to look at were the spiders. I think the Tierpark was definitely one of my favorite things that I did in Germany (with the exception of the last night with good food and running from the law ;P).

Damn now I wish I could come back again. I hate you all because I am insanely jealous of the stuff you are guys doing there, and would give pretty much anything to be there right now.
