When I was liv­ing in Munich four years ago, one of the few really good Asian friends I made was Mingxia. She was from Shang­hai but came to Ger­many for work and study. At that time, she was mar­ried to a Ger­man and they had a son. I remem­ber her being really proud of her kid but flus­tered when­ever he refused to learn any Mandarin.

Now she’s writ­ten me to say she’s get­ting remar­ried. I believe I’ve met her hus­band Thomas before, and he seems a really nice guy. I’ve called Mingxia my god­sis­ter cos it was nice hav­ing a Chi­nese friend around when you’re a for­eigner sur­rounded by so many gwai­los. First per­son to give me a decent palm read­ing too, but that’s a story for another day.
