When I was living in Munich four years ago, one of the few really good Asian friends I made was Mingxia. She was from Shanghai but came to Germany for work and study. At that time, she was married to a German and they had a son. I remember her being really proud of her kid but flustered whenever he refused to learn any Mandarin.

Now she’s written me to say she’s getting remarried. I believe I’ve met her husband Thomas before, and he seems a really nice guy. I’ve called Mingxia my godsister cos it was nice having a Chinese friend around when you’re a foreigner surrounded by so many gwailos. First person to give me a decent palm reading too, but that’s a story for another day.
