Living A Good Life?

There doesn’t seem to be any way to go forward or backward. I’m stuck here. Right here. Can’t move. (Or do not want to, will not.)

Yet… Seems like a million years ago — I wrote this with such conviction, such heady confidence — I wonder, how much of this do I believe in still, if at all?

It seems to me that there are far too many uncertainties in life.

You may be studying something today you will not use or even hate tomorrow. You have a job today, that might be gone tomorrow too. Businesses fail as well. Lovers and spouses leave, pass away or simply vanish. Nothing is certain except, as they say, uncertainty itself.

How do we deal?

I believe that most of us don’t.

It’s a constant struggle, day after day, and as months turn to years, we lose sight of whatever bold and fantastic ambitions we may have had, and yes, we can barely keep hold of their meagre remains - the memories of our dreams.

We lose hope.

And comes a day, when all has passed beyond the pale and a decision must be made. Do we muster our strength and fight as we never fought before, or do we surrender, dwindle and fade?

Never surrender.

Not your dreams, or your desires, if they are right and true. Your passions will lead where no logic may prevail. Let your fantasies take rein once more, and transport you to where you could not travel before. Give yourself permission to live, and to live well.

Trust me, living a good life isn’t that hard.

Living a good life is about counting your blessings. Food at the table, a roof over our heads. The company of real friends and the warmth of our loved ones wrapped around us. How often do you receive a good, strong hug? (How often do you give one?)

Living a good life is about learning to let go, and learning to live with that.

Living a good life is waking every day with a smile on your face, knowing that you are looking forward to every moment to come, ready to face and triumph over new challenges.

Living a good life is retiring at night, satisfied and content, knowing that your day has been a job well done, and done right.

Living a good life is about being able to rest, and to do that without any worries, doubts or fears. (”Without any worries, doubts or fears?” Well, there will always be some; so learn to deal.)

Living a good life is when even the worst of times, the deepest of cuts, the strain of tears when sorrow is too much - when all of these hurts are as precious to you as the good, shiny parts of your life. These are the tests you pass to emerge the champion of Yourself.

That’s living a good life to me.

And a very good life at that.

A coincidence, I think it must be, for me to read this, just as I’m trying to convince myself that it’s about time I live my life the way I want to. To live a good life, by your standards.
But I don’t like to believe in coincidences, too convenient.
