Beckett Screwed @ Breakfast?

Time for another literary shot in the arm again. You know you need the juice… ;)

1x: A Bucketful of Beckett

A Bucketful of Beckett

My good friend Derek Ong is acting in this one! (Man’s a genius — he’s our BodyBalance mascot and cheerleader too.) Eight short plays by Samuel Beckett. Or, eight shots, if you will. ;) (I wanna know who did the poster design for this; love it, love it!)

Tickets are available at the door, or for bookings, call Andre at 017–6169588 or email tickets@klensemble.com

2x: Screwed

Screwed

I’m quite excited about this one, as two of my regular readers are involved — the ever-delightful Pat Low wrote one of the plays; Gary Ooi wrote one too and is acting to boot. Poster design is his as well. These multi-talented folks put me quite to shame. Here’s what they say:

The Oral Stage enters its fourth season with an all-new line-up of original shorts and monologues, a contemporary take on the timeless issues of identity, gender, relationships, meaning and purpose. Screwed reinforces the fact that being human is nothing short of being screwed, after all.

The shows run from April 19th – 22nd 2007 @ KLPac, and May 4th– 6th 2007 @ The Actors Studio Greenhall, Penang. For more details, please visit The Oral Stage site here.

3x: Breakfast Club 3

Breakfast Club 3

The 3rd MPH Breakfast Club for LitBloggers on Saturday, April 28, 2007 will feature Kuala Lumpur-based journalist Dina Zaman, whose new book, I Am Muslim, a collection of essays, was published by Silverfish Books in March 2007; Farish A. Noor, the author of such Malaysian bookstore staples as The Other Malaysia and From Majapahit to Putrajaya; and Larry Parr, the writer of Tan Chin Nam: Never Say I Assume!, an autobiography of one of Malaysia’s leading captains of industry.

Dina Zaman will be introduced by Sharon Bakar. Farish A. Noor and Larry Parr will be introduced by Eric C. Forbes. And… I will be moderating the session, so it will be up to me to deal with the usual questions on how-to-make-money-from-books.

If it helps, the answer’s still the same: Unless you’re J.K.Rowling or Stephen King, go do something else. Like a financial planner or hired assassin. Both pay better and are less stressful. They don’t have to keep fielding questions from people who attend literary gatherings just to ask questions about how-to-make-money-from-books, for example.

4x: “Readings“
Also, let’s not forget our monthly “Readings” organised by Sharon Bakar and kindly sponsored by Seksan and La Bodega.

Date and Time: 3.30 p.m. Saturday 28th April, 2007
Place: Seksan’s, 67, Jalan Tempinis 1, Lucky Garden, Bangsar. (Click here for the map)
Admission: Free!!

More details to follow as soon as Sharon finalises her list of readers. If nothing goes wrong, one of them will be me

Update: Here’s the final line-up of readers. Look who’s the poor sod who has to start it off!

  • Congratulations! You have won a Thinking Blogger Award. Please collect your blog-sticker and list of rules at rubyahmad’s!’

  • So many events this month and i wudn be able to attend two of my favourite ones. sighh.. well, at least i’ll be able to make it to 8 Shots & Screwed..both definitely look interesting. *anyone wanna go with me?? =D*

You HAD to put the “people who attend literary gatherings just to ask questions about how-to-make-money-from-books” in didn’t you, Kenny? hahah…for those who haven’t been to the BC events, you absolutely have to go and see what Kenny is talking about. ;o)

    Have fun reading at “Readings”..

P/S: love the poster..simple and fresh..what made u think of putting kiwis?

    PP/S: *ahem!* u still owe me sumthin don’cha? =P *think, Kenny…think*

  • Ruby!
What a wonderful thing to see in my inbox first thing in the morning! I’m not sure I deserve it — do I even think that much? But some of my favourite bloggers have been awarded — Kak Teh, Dina Zaman, Bibliobibuli, Yang-May Ooi — so I guess I’m in very, very good company. :)

Thank you so much for thinking of me (no pun intended); will post up my list-of-five hopefully by the end of this week, latest next week.

Now, who to nominate next? Decisions, decisions…

  • spiffy,
Don’t worry, you had already managed to catch quite a few last month, perhaps this is a way for you to get a breather. And if you miss BC3 and “Readings”, well, you have a chance of taking two theatre shows with multiple plays each.

As for the “people who attend literary gatherings just to ask questions about how-to-make-money-from-books” bit, I guess anyone who drops by your blog will have inkling of who we’re talking about. Or they can just see it “live” by coming to BC3, heh heh.

I have no idea what to read at “Readings” though; maybe I should do another voting entry, i.e. ‘What should Kenny read @ “Readings”?’

P.S. I told Eric I’d do something in technipopcolour, but then I did several posters in full bloom colour, so I decided to go clean and fresh this time round. Wanted kiwi fruits for the ‘juicy’ bit, i.e. juicy discussions @ BC3?

P.P.S. Really? Hmm, this Blogger may not Think that well after all… (Hope Ruby doesn’t regret awarding me.)

  • yeah, will be relaxing for sure…so i’ll be waiting for the write-up of both events when i come back. ;o) I would suggest that they go see it “live” on the 28th. heheh..more action.. haha..

ermm…read those that will sound good aloud. u’ve tried a few, haven’t you? ;o)

hahhah…it has sumthin to do with HTML, codings.. *ahem* *ahem*

  • they should leave the hongkee/korean/taiwanese boys to strut their stuff somewhere else :P

i would die for kings of convenience to grace our shores. or death cab. OH, death cab.

of course i support local music! why on earth would i organise little gigs if i didn’t? ;)

p.s– you haven’t answered my question! you going for screwed or not? and yes, yumcha sounds good. one day, one day ;)

  • spiffy,
Good idea, I thought of it too. Will read some stories aloud and see which works, which doesn’t. Which were the ones you liked again, from Broken Mornings?

You can bet I’ll do a write up on BC3 and “Readings” — these are my monthly haunts now, aren’t they? I blame Eric and Sharon, naturally.

I wonder how long before one of the guests in attendance blows up at the inane, incessant $$$ questions? Would be a lovely sight to see, I tell ya…

And HTML codings? Why would I owe you something so mundane? I guess it’s better than owing people favours or money. Ah, does this have anything to do with your impending move to Wordpress? :)

  • Pat,
They’ll strut whatever they have wherever there is demand, I suppose. Or bucketfuls of drool. Heh.

Must listen to Kings of Convenience then. I trust The Pat with regards to recommendations. And I know you do support local music, hence the disclaimer! ;)

P.S. Unsure for Screwed cos me weekend’s already full but will do me best to, uhm, reschedule some of them appointments, heh.

P.P.S. I bet yumcha with Pat is like dining with a rainbow… ;)

  • Mmm.…so many things to see & do and places to be at!

  • wmw,
You know what they say, right? Take step-by-step, one-by-one lor… ;)

O and when are we gonna do the crossover LitFoodBloggers gathering ya? (We can call ourselves Foodie-Litters, heh heh heh.)

I can smell the fabulous makan di, and the hungry, growling bellies of starving writers, haha.

  • yes! i’m currently listening to ‘riot on an empty street’. and while you’re at it give death cab for cutie’s ‘plans’ and sufjan steven’s ‘illinoise’ a try :D

p.s– ahh. i know. i don’t even have time to watch it save the last night.

    p.s.s– but rainbows don’t talk :P

  • Pat,
I do like Death Cab from what I’ve heard of it; they seem to be here, there, everywhere.

And I’m a major Sufjan Stevens fan! I’m listening to his song The Seer’s Tower now. In fact, my current play list is all his songs! I am so happy you like him. This is the Final, Definitive Proof that you are my Soulmate. Confirm. And I say this in a non-stalker-sorta way. Even though I did start the Pat Low Appreciation Fan Club with Ted Mahsun. Uhm, yeah.

Now, if you say you like The Decemberists, I shall just expire right now in ecstasy…

P.S. I hate not having another 24 hours in my week. Ga.

P.P.S. O but they do. They speak in colours, as do you, I suspect — pinesap and cranered and nettlewhite…

  • :D no way :O a sufjan fan!

i sixteen military wives on my player :) you should so totally try ‘explosions in the sky’ too.

oh stalkers can’t be as nice as you are. it just won’t seem right.

p.p.s– i am quite adept at corfu pink, geraniumlake and novascotia salmon.

  • eh, typo.

i just heard them sing sixteen military wives on my player.
    :D

  • Kenny,

Thanks for your sweet comment. You just brightened up my somewhat gloomy Tuesday here in Southern CA.

And yes yes yes to your question.

Anyway, what is your email address so we can talk offline? Mine is —@—- :)

(Ed. I removed her email for privacy.)

  • I like “Settling In”, “You Can’t Wait”. I love “Smell”. Though i’m not sure if they’re suitable for reading out loud..

I’ll be waiting for your write-up, then. Ahh.. and i blame you..for marketing both events so well that now i’m quite sad to have to miss them this month. Of course, i had loads of fun the last time & it’s really something i wouldn’t miss going..;o)

I can just imagine it now, Kenny..Boy that’ll be a sight to see..haha..U absolutely have to fill me in on that part, ya?

    Sighh…comments, Kenny..comments..bold, italic, etc..=P

P/S: Ohh, bout my move to WordPress.. i’ve found the perfect date to do so. Easier for me to remember it in the future. Heheh..May 23rd, WordPress here i come! =D

  • for a minute there, just a glance at your posts’ title, i thot you have started writing on food too! hehe.. wah, looks like someone will be real busy these few weeks :)

  • Pat,
Maybe it’s not a typo after all. We can sixteen ourselves some military wives and twenty-five us some patchwork husbands… Whatever that means. :)

Well, I’ve had my fair share of stalkers and spammers, online and offline, so maybe it’s time I get with the game, eh? But if this doesn’t feel right, Ms. Low, I must ask thee, what does feel right? Tell me, tell me…

P.S. Your colours send me over, deranged, happily so. The sky must have cried her eyes out to make a rainbow as you… O beautiful…

  • Rasa Malaysia,
Yes, yes, yes is a fantastic answer, my dear! Will start asking round then. What a delicious project this will be!

I can just imagine the final work — it’d be like foodporn, but only in the nicest sense! You make me wanna yong tau foo and yakitori myself…

Will email you as soon as I can, perhaps at the end of my work day? I’m editing your email out for your privacy. Stalkers abound, I assure you. And my blog is no exception, unfortunately. :(

  • spiffy,
Pandai girl! Those were the three I read and liked too! Ah, the “Readings” crowd is a hardy bunch — they’ve survived much more explicit material, methinks. Brave lot, them.

Don’t hold your breath though. I’m forever behind me schedule. Next up is Dina Zaman’s I Am Muslim review, and maybe the Thinking Blogger post after that. Not enough time in one day? Nah, it’s just the way I’m made. There is always perfectly enough time for the day I make.

As for the HTML/comments, didn’t I email you that ages ago? Let me check and resend. Else, just google it, you may learn much more… ;)

P.S. Can’t wait to see what your Wordpress blog looks like. Cool…

  • sc,
You don’t know half of it! Still catching up on so many things — book covers, BodyBalance practice, a review or ten, more blog entries, events to attend, a reading, collaborations flying out of my ears, and someone just asked me to promote their mom’s book…

Did I mention I have a day job too? Hahaha…

No complaints though, this is wayyyyyy FUN! :D

Now, you got me thinking about foodblogging… Where’s my camera again? Mamak stalls, watch out! Kenny the food critic may be coming your way soon! Beware, beware!

  • Hi Kenny,

You definitely deserve it. I love your energy and interest in so many things. It is infectious and it does people good as you indulge in wonderful and beneficial interests. Spread it around my friend.

Gosh! You are sharing here so many fun events and I love them all. Only at the moment I am grounded to organise some personal small family do this weekend and can’t join you guys on 28th going away for awhile then…next time round I will join you guys. Thank you for sharing anyway. Cheers.

  • As for Foodie-Litters, we can start small, maybe impromptu ones (as we have each other’s contact)…then later on do a bigger gathering.

  • Kak Ruby,
Doing my best to spread all the POSTIVE energies around… :)

I only wish I can attend all of them, so better to share them here so everyone can at least catch one or two. We will catch you at next month’s events, no worries! You can count me to announce them. :)

    wmw,
Yes, starting small is a great idea. That way it’s more informal and relaxed anyway… And we can eat to our heart’s content without worrying about splashes of gravy on our faces, heh heh heh.…

  • I’m up for some food-litting — no problem can wax poetic about food :) besides I’m one of those people who look at food pics like it is porn. It all comes down to food!

Congrats Kenny on your Thinking Blogger Award! You certainly get all of us chatting and thinking.

    Lovely rainbowspeak.

Your positive energy makes me happy. ;)

  • I guess that’s why they call it food porn, Msiagirl! I’m guilty of this very healthy (methinks) addiction too. :D

And thanks for your congratulations, though I’m still unsure if I even deserve it. I do enjoy the discussion in my comments section very much — it takes us to all sorts of places, doesn’t it? O such tales of lands I long to go… :)

  • i didn’t know you know derek! we used to go to the same yoga class at axis (nadira’s class to be exact)

and about time he’s an instructor too coz he’s damn good at yoga (i’m envious of his flexibility!)

and derek, if you’re reading this, HI! see you saturday at jean’s class (if you’re going that is :D )

  • asm@di,
Welcome to Life for Beginners! Always happy to see a new face, er, new comment. Derek is mondo cool and damn, dude is flexible, ain’t he? One time, he just dropped down to the floor into a split. Like in one nanosecond!

    Cemburu-nya kami semua…

And yes, he should, nay, he MUST be the first of our batch to turn instructor, our “tai-kor” so to speak. Me, I’m like the lame lamb of the bunch, yet still I try… (Never give up, never surrender!)

Derek does read this blog but maybe not so often now since he’s busy rehearsing for the Beckett play. You might want to give him a ring or text him a message to be safe, bro.

  • Me wanna go! Beluga wants to go!!!!

  • Kenny! I’ll make sure I’ll not miss this month’s Readings!! Gua mau kacau lu hehe

  • The Quiet Storm,
Beluga, meet the Sperm Whale. Hahaha…

Yeah, you better be there! Kacau sama gua manyak-manyak lah, baru cun deh…

And oooh, don’t forget to wear them foot-long stilletos of yours. Sizzle-bizzle! ;)

  • Yeahhhh sure i wear one! I want you to go beluGAGA sama gua!! me bring me “step-on-your-toes” stilletos ! yayyys

  • hmm. my guts say you’re harmless. and i trust my guts. yeah, so it all boils down to my guts talking.
    :D

yay, you’ve got a thinking blogger award!

  • The Quiet Storm,
Now you’re just saying that to make me nervous and excited all at the same time. Naughty, naughty, good girl… ;)

    Pat,
I can’t believe you said I’m harmless — my testosterone levels just took a nose-dive. You and your trustworthy guts, you.

And, is it true: “I think, therefore I blog?” :)

  • so many plays that i have no idea that are available in m’sia..should put some effort to go and attend..thanks for dropping by..proud to know that my blog is being read by a writer..

  • lotsofcravings,
I know exactly what you mean! Till I started exploring, I too didn’t know all these plays were even happening. Now I’m being Mr. Nosey for all of you, find out this, find out that… ;)

And I’m glad I found your blog — another foodblog I enjoy! You eat, you take pictures; I read, my tummy growls but NO calories! Hahaha…

  • Hahah..thanks Kenny for being Mr. KPC for us so we can enjoy lots more local events happening around town. ;o)

P/S: doesn’t matter as long as you write about them..;o)

PP/S: sudah fikir nak baca apa kat “Readings”?

  • spiffy,
KPC pun ada standard tau… ;)

P.S. Ha, I like readers with low expectations, at least, in terms of delivery, ole procrastinator ole me.

P.P.S. Nope. But masih ada masa, kan dah kata I procrastinator what…

  • yealar…yealar…ada standard la..=P

P/S: and i’m one of them. hahah..

PP/S: Most of us are guilty of that. As long masa tu ade cerita untuk dibaca..;o)

  • spiffy,
I’m considering just printing the whole book and picking stories to read at random. Or, if enough of my readers are in the audience, ask for requests. Ceh, macam le main musik…

  • That sounds fun..=D Can read “Smell” for me ah, friend? Although i won’t be there…hehe. ;o) I gotta go source for a sound recorder la.. That idea might just work..i’m sure you’ll have your readers in the crowd. No worries..

P/S: Of course u’ll be short of Moi la..lolzz..

  • Of course, I will! I’d go something like this: “One of my blogger friends has requested that I read Smell today. This one’s for you, sniffy, er, I mean spiffy…” ;)

P.S. Hope your cold’s better now.

  • Hahahha… You and my ‘one-trick-pony friend are the same, both also call me sniffy. Both big meanies..hmpphh!

Ironic, isn’t it? I love “Smell”..but i always have flu & cold which blocks out my smelling system sometimes..Hahah..

P/S: ermm..i’m not sneezing, which is good news but still.. *sniff* *sniff*

  • P/S: ohh, thanks for willing to read Smell. =D

  • […] Uhm. Yes. As some of you may already know, I have been awarded a Thinking Blogger award by the ever-radiant Ruby Ahmad, […]

  • spiffy,
Since I was born in the Year of the Horse, and my surname means “Horse” in Chinese, you better call me a one-trick-horse.

Wonder where this one-trick-pony and one-trick-horse will run to, eh? ;)

  • Hahah…Horse sounds more manly than pony huh? That’s why the two of you are so single taskers. hahah…both also Horsie(i just made it sound feminine..hahah).

Wherever it is, do take me for a ride if you guys are having fun. ;o) *i don’t sound crude do i? hahahh…*

  • spiffy,
This is the first time I’ve heard of a threesome… involving two horses! So scandalous…

  • hahahah…yeah…scandalous alright. suddenly i find it very funny..2 horses & a pig. hahahah… aduii…

  • spiffy,
Pig? What pig? I didn’t mention no pig. Eh, tak halal le…

  • hahaha…so now ur blog has become officially halal? okie lor…*walks away…*

  • spiffy,
Not really lah. Wait till you see some of my food blogs coming up — hope I don’t scare any Muslim readers away then!

    Henry,
Thanks for the introduction to another great blog. Will go and view it not — and consider this an unofficial Thinking Blogger recommendation from you! :)

  • the chinese words read “During my days in the “goverment sector”

so i took the goverment sector out and twisted it.

May it be.…. “During my days in blogging”

cantonese can sounds like this, if u can catch,

And yeah, welcome to Life for Beginners!

    spiffy,
Ya, you can prepare now by saving up your drool… Hahahaha…

  • Hahahha…i’m not someone who is easily tempted. =P

P/S: am still thinking what to reply to ur latest post…U wait, You..grr..! =P

  • spiffy,
