Eats, Reads & Leaves

Another month, another round of litty-itty events… :D

1. BC5
From the teaser: “The 5th MPH Breakfast Club for LitBloggers on Saturday, June 23, 2007, will feature Zhang Su Li, an award-winning copywriter who has just come out with her first travel book called A Backpack and a Bit of Luck. She will be introduced by Sharon Bakar. The indefatigable Kenny Mah will be moderating the session.”

Zhang Su LiExcept the indefatigable Kenny Mah is apparently defatigable after all (is that even a word?) and won’t be moderating, more’s the pity since I’ve met Su Li in person twice before and she’s a fascinating lady.

Nope, I got the dates for BC5 confused with that of “Readings” (see below), so won’t be making it.

Instead, I’ll be gallivanting around town with my newly wed Polish-Italian friends, hopefully getting them to try eating banana leaf rice with their bare hands or sniffing a durian.

Yeah, I’m a good friend like that. ;)

Date: June 23, 2007 (Saturday)
Time: 11.00a.m.-12.30p.m.
Venue: MPH Bangsar Village II, Lot 2F-1 (2nd Floor), Bangsar Village II, No. 2, Jalan Telawi 1, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Tel: 603‑2287 3600

2. “Readings“
You know the drill: poets and writers and free wine. Pringles too, if you’re early enough. What’s not to love? Be there, or be something not-really-cool. Click on the poster for more details…

3. Fallen Leaves
My favourite lit-babe’s got her hands behind this one. Go support Pat Low, but more importantly support the cause:

Fallen Leaves is a dreamscape where lives and stories swept to the fringes are collected gently as one. Their sounds chime with the stories of lives lived less ordinary.

Fallen LeavesVenue: Dram Projects Studio, Block B, Happy Mansion, Jalan 17/13, Petaling Jaya

  • N.B. Photograph taken by Evgeniy Lukyanov, used in “Readings” poster.

  • What great events and readers — I would attend all of them if i could. Will follow all reportage. :) Enjoy everyone.

  • im sure you have plenty of foodie blogs to refer to when it comes to taking ur newly wed frens!..i thought when i 1st saw the fallen leaves poster you were referring to adeline mah similarly titled book..

  • Banana leaf rice and durians — yummy!

  • Msiagirl
I’m sure you would if you could; me too actually. It sucks missing two Breakfast Clubs in a row, but there’s BC6 to look forward to with Tinling Choong. :)

    Joe with lots of cravings
That’s true! I realise I don’t actually need to know all the best places to makan when I’ve got food bloggers to refer to… O my friends are in for a treat! :D

The Fallen Leaves performance is a “devised performance” exploring the lives of People With HIV & AIDS (PWHA). What’s Adeline Mah’s book about?

    Tunku
Yummy is right! But maybe not together, at the same meal? Might be sensory overload!

  • So, did your newly wed friends enjoy themselves here?

  • ipohwav3
They just checked into their hotel this morning and probably resting now before heading out for some shopping in KL. I’ll meet them tonight for dinner, and tomorrow night too, and the rest of the weekend… so I’ll probably post about it next week… after I wake up from a dreamless sleep on Sunday evening… LOL

A very busy week, but I’m so excited too! Times like this, it’s easy to love Life and all that goes with it. Have a Terrific Thursday, Jason! :D

  • just like joe, i thot you were referring to adeline yen mah’s fallen leaves. i’ve only read her other book; chinese cinderella, heard that it’s linked closely to fallen leaves. both are about her life, very touching, need lots of kleenex though..

  • Thanks for stopping by my blog!
So, did you introduce your Polish-Italian friends to durian?? hehe! My husband (he’s french) refuses to go near it!

  • sc
I like the title of that one — Chinese Cinderella — though I’m not sure I’m the mood for reading something with tons of Kleenex at my side though. I’m feeling way too happy this week… :D

Hmm, she has the same surname as me; wonder if I’d see my name on the front cover of a book in print one day? *dreams away*

    wokandspoon
O trust me, the pleasure was all mine! Delicious your blog is. ;)

As for durians? Not yet, but there’s still time… O they might just love it or hate it, but they sure won’t forget it!

  • Oh have a really good time with your friends! I’m sure no matter what they’ll always remember their visit here — and they get to see you — what else could they want? :)

  • The photo of Zhang Su Li is a great photo. The angle is just right. Su Li looks radiant in that photo. Also, her top goes well with her new travel book, “A back pack.…”

Eating with bare hands without fork and spoons from banana leaves sounds like an adventure. The bride can feed the groom and vice versa. You and Nisa can watch.

Mom laughed when she saw me eating durian with a fork. We only get frozen ones here and they are super cold.

  • well fallen leaves among others i love to read falls under the 1900s era in china..basically the before during and after era of mao.. yeah its pretty sad..but very nice to read..

  • uhmm a bit hard to read the names on the READINGS — sorry :(

  • Had plans to be at the BC5 myself but something has come up. Good thing as well, can catch BC6 and reading on the same day next month.

  • Msiagirl
What else could they want? Hmm, tough question. They already did much shopping in the Golden Triangle area of KL yesterday during the day, was amazed at the size of Berjaya Times Square.

At night, we had the good fortune of having Ms. Lemongrass as foodie guide, taking us to Jalan Alor for the famous barbecued chicken wings, and later some Hong Kong-style deserts.

But it was really good seeing them again, we were grinning from ear to ear all night. Weird not seeing your friends for five years, and you do, they are a married couple! I am so happy for them! :D

  • mrshbt
I got Su Li’s photo from Eric Forbe’s blog, but as it was a little dark, I brightened it up a bit, and made it slightly sunnier. She does radiant, doesn’t she? :)

As for the bride and groom feeding each other banana leaf rice, that’s a brilliant idea! I’m so making them do that. Not sure when during this trip we’ll do banana leaf rice though. Yesterday was fun seeing them trying to use chopsticks, and I must admit, they did quite well!

(Though Gosia told me, earlier in the day, they had more than a few stares from the waiter as they were learning the ropes, er, sticks, as it were.)

It’s no longer the durian season here, unfortunately, but if I find some, I’m sure to let them try. They are very sporting and game for it, despite hearing all the horror stories. *proud of the honeymooners*

  • Joe with lots of cravings
With this to recommend it, I’ll keep a look out for a copy myself. Sounds like something I’d enjoy reading too. I guess, in a way, sad stories remind me to be grateful my own life is happier? Thanks again for the rec.

    G
Try clicking on the pic for a larger-sized poster. It just isn’t meant for the width of my blog, even though I designed it myself. You need to see it in its full glory. ;)

    Obiter Dictum
Cool beans. Catcha at BC6 then and the July “Readings” — be sure to introduce yourself! I don’t bite… usually.

  • Hi Kenny,

What? …you wrote, ‘indefatigable Kenny Mah is apparently defatigable after all’…ha ha. That is so funny. These days with so many appointments I get my dates all mixed up too. Nevermind, we just do lah.

I was just mentioning durian to hubby yesterday. Now you have to remind me. Must get some..he he.

  • Kenny,
Your post’s font is small but your comment site’s font is big and easy for me to read. My friend also uses wordpress and her fonts are the opposite of yours.

  • Kak Ruby
We just do lah is right. I’ve finally learned to go with the flow and not stress myself out too much, though I do still get stressed a little. Part of it is learning that I’d never be truly perfect and that’s okay.

Trying too hard to be a perfectionist just made me miserable in the past, and now I’m more interested in being me and being happy, and enjoy the company of all the great people around me. Just like you. :D

We should both get us some durian!

    Alice
The wordpress templates determine the fonts sizes, I believe. The only thing I add on are the images, and the content, of course. I’m glad you are able to read the comments easily.

For me, they are the best parts of the blog. Definitely more interesting than the entries I write. I love reading what you guys think… very often on completely different topics than the post itself! :D

  • Durians season? It is now upnorth. And mangosteens… and rambutans… and I’m going tomm! Whooopee!

  • hehe

you said these in the same sentences …

    tee hee

Try clicking … for a larger-sized .… You need to see it in its full glory.”

    tee hee hee (blush)

  • Tummythoz
Wah, have to go up north to get me some durians for Gosia & Manuel meh? Susah leh like that. Maybe there might be some stray ones left in Malacca…

By the way, the honeymooners had their first taste of our local (and not so local) fruits today at Petaling Street — Gosia loved the mangosteens and jackfruit, Manuel prefers rambutans to lychees like me, and we passed a man selling DVDs while spouting Malay profanities loudly at tourists who didn’t have a clue, to which I guffawed even more loudly.

    Good times.

Hey, you’re going north as I’m heading south tomorrow! Why are we moving so far from each other? :(

  • G
Right. Dude, you sure put the “oversized” in the phrase “oversized imagination.” Waitaminute, didn’t I mean “overactive”? Gosh, now you’re making me do it too. Infectious you are.

And what’s to blush. It in its full glory is, well, glorious.

O it’s so time for bed now. I’m no longer making any sense…

  • I better eat less and read more :)

  • Hey…have loads of fun and food in Malacca!

  • Durian out of season there? You should come to Penang and try some. Eat as much as you like, and don’t worry. Can use credit card one.

  • p.melukis wrote:

(O_O) Oy vey iz mir, my oversized imagination didn’t merely become overactive but went into hyperdrive; but of course, ‘it’ has indeed been accentuated to your great benefit Mr. Mah (mine imaginazion, she eez verry, verry generouz, non?)
Cheers and good job on the poster :-)

  • Durians…forgot about the choc durian cakes at Just Heavenly Pleasures, ar? It’s as close as you can get to the real thing. :-) With the added buffer of rich chocolate coating. MmmmMmmmMMmmm.

  • Tigerfish
Nay! Never! As much of a bibliophile as I am, I’d never eat less and read more. Feed the mind? Important, yes, but more so to feed the belly.

Happy belly = Happy Kenny :D

    wmw
O we did…loads of it. Will blog about it next once I find the time. My favourite phrase-of-the-trip? Gosia going, “Kenny… this is SO good.”

    k.kim
Heh, we found some durians after all. My Dad has his connections. And did the Honeymooners try some? Wait till the next blog post to find out lar… *suspense only*

But, wah, can use credit card to buy durians in Penang ar? Very serious about your durians, aren’t you, my fellow Straits-Settlers?

  • pelukis melukis

O dear, have I gotten myself into another one of these situations already? All these words — “hyperdrive” and “accentuated” and “generous” — will no doubt be aiding me in a decent round of verbal indigestion later.

Are we even on the same page / poster on “it”? LOL.

    Lyrical Lemongrass
The real thing? I’m all about the Real Thing, babe.

    MmmmMmmmMMmmm is right. ;)

  • kookymonsta wrote:

Hey there! Drop by the Kooky Jar! :D

  • kookymonsta
Ah, but where is the link to all these kookiness? Mayhaps you forgot to include it in your comment? ;)

  • I loves it when people have the bigs imagination!

I’m’s gonna do these thing “http://www.apostrophegallery.com/” caz its too funs!

You gonna shoulda woulda coulda do its too! ! !

    ( beaming with happyness! )

  • LOL! I totally forgot!

  • G
And I would, I would, if only I had the time… This month will be all work and activities galore for me… Any time leftover will be dedicated solely to the Great Malaysian Past-time of Sleep. Or was that Eating? Nevermind, Sleep is My Great Past-Time anyway… and far too few hours have I devoted to it of late.

But Apostrophe sounds great with Dina, Jerome and Sharon judging too! Gosh, what a small world we live in! :)

    KookyMonsta
No worries, now we can all go visit you and get a taste of your kookiness… eh, no non-work-safe stuff, right?

  • If you sleep, than its best with someone cozy to cuddle up with — whee — when its cold and chilly from the rains outside.

Wheee — the bestest sleep ever!

    (( hugglez ))

  • G
If that’s the recipe for the bestest sleep ever, then all I need is for it to be cold and chilly from the rain outside tonight. :)

  • (( GASP! ))

You’ve beeeen holding out on me!!!

(( shock horror and more gasping ))

  • I must admit, all the sulee(li)s are pretty talented :)

  • ooh no comment I am sure! Bet you don’t mean your hedgehog thing either. a Ha.

  • back from Bangkok, too tired to post anything else. *ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.….….….*

  • sulee
I must admit, you might just be right! ;)

    Msiagirl
Well, no. I don’t sleep with hedgehogs. Lol. But. Yes. No comments.

    Henry
First, it’s asstha to Phuket, now you and Bangkok. What’s with everyone travelling to Thailand these days? Me needs a holiday too… :(

  • (( hugs ))

I expect to see you there Saturday, okies :D

    (( hugs ))

  • Hi Kenny,

Oh you’ve been busy travelling? Ok have a rest and bounce back. Cheers.

  • let’s see, airasia cheap flights, cheap accommodation, cheap shopping, cheap eating, cheap spa, cheap holiday.

Must be cheapy cheapy cheap cheap

  • Kak Ruby
Not so much holiday travelling but running around for work and for my friends. So ya, a bit fatigued right now so will take most of the weekend off to rest.

And then, definitely bouncing back! :D

    Thanks for your concern, dear.

    Henry
Cheap cheap is okay ma… so long as you enjoy yourself. I can never say no to a bargain so long as I want the product/service in the first place. If it’s unnecessary, then great bargain also no use, right? ;)

  • G
Just rescued your last two comments from the spam list, bro. So replying to it now: better late than never, eh?

    Uhm, you sure (( GASP! )) and (( hugs )) a lot, dontcha? ;)

All the best for your Reading! :D

  • Great headline, Kenny! ^_^
Did you read the Lynne Truss book?

  • Argus
Hah! Finally someone caught the reference! Good job!

As for Lynne’s book, sadly no — I tend to avoid books which are sudden bestsellers, treating them with much suspicion, though I’m sure it’s really brilliant. That and I’m really a lazy reader and writer these days, despite some still referring to me as a “LitBlogger” — I think I’m more of a “blog-when-I-can-find-the-time-blogger”…

  • eat, shoots and leaves is actually quite entertaining, and it only takes a few hours to read… I had a field day with the stickers they gave out with the book

just dropped in to say the fallen leaves poster is gorgeous, kudos to the designer

  • Madcap Machinist
Yeah, I love the Fallen Leaves poster too. had asked Pat who the designer was but his name escapes me now. Brilliant work.

Will check out “Eats, Shoots and Leaves” with your recommendation… had sorta avoided it before due to the hoopla around it. Guess some books may be worth all the fuss after all, eh? ;)
