What makes a home?

Too long I’ve flittered from place to place, country to country, without leaving a mark of my own. My childhood sanctuary still persists in my old hometown of Malacca, but my bedroom has been stripped bare by years of me moving round elsewhere. Nothing remains the same, they say.

Sometimes it takes a gentle nudge, sometimes a violent shove to get one moving. The last place I stayed in, the landlord decided to sell off the house and I had to find another place. Again. Always impermanent. I was so sick of feeling like I was living out of my suitcase, though that was hardly the case.

So, for once, against all notions of good sense and sobriety, I followed my heart and moved into a place completely my own. A small studio apartment, just for me. Got the best rental rate I could find, and a pretty decent (and pretty) real estate agent, and a week later, I moved in.

Candle-light Runway

Packing up was murder. Last minute at that. So like me. Yet. So unlike me. The anal-retentive-obsessive-compulsive ol’ me. Where did that Kenny go? Did I leave him behind in Germany, all these years past? Did Blue Mike and Useless McGyver really tear the last bits of punctuality and dependability from my being? Or did Marco and Manuel finally teach me how to live life like the Italians did, one glorious day at a time?

O Life!

Maybe I simply became truly Malaysian for good. Slowly, slowly also can what. Eh? And when the movers came early, wasn’t that a shocker? But one can learn to breathe and work through it all. Work it out. Breathe. And then they leave. And I’m left with Nisa (the best pal anyone could ask for) in my first place just for myself. She tells me to breathe (for the n-th time) and to eat the breakfast she bought me. I do that.

Then scurry away to unpack. Boxes. Stuff inside. Needs to come out. Be arranged. Look pretty. People might come.

But I know it’d be weeks before I let anyone else in.

Books & more!

Privacy is a premium when you spend almost all your waking hours with other people. Work life. Social life. No life? Mrs. HBT wonders why I’m wistful. Msiagirl hopes I don’t tire myself out with all I try to do. Lyrical Lemongrass asks me if I’m giving too much of myself away. I’m worried I’m not giving enough. Almost worth a smile, sly and silly.

Not privacy then, but private time. Quiet time. To be alone.

Almost.

I hate being lonely. Yet sometimes the crowd can be far too overwhelming. Screams and shouts and scores a goal with every sentence. “I win, I win, I win!” It’s always “me, me, me!” Isn’t it? Sure was true for me before.

But there is no loneliness here.

There is music and merriment and magic in the air. Mirth and myrrh. And a mamak stall right around the corner. What more can a man ask for?

Slumberland...

Not just a sanctuary either. My home is where I feel blessed, to be loved and to be able to love. To allow myself all that I have forsaken before. Too long now. This is everything I ever wanted.

Why didn’t anyone tell me before that Joy wasn’t ever a chore, wasn’t ever so difficult? A challenge, yes, sometimes, but O it’s here, everywhere, all the time, if I’d have it. And I would, yes, please, I want to be happy.

Now.

Not tomorrow, not when I turn thirty, not when I earn my first million bucks, not when… not whenever. Right now is all that matters. Honestly. I should have seen this earlier, but it’s not too late, thank God.

White Roses

White roses and candle-light. A runway for you to swoop down into my arms. Music, for you are so full of song you lift me up each time you sing. The colour of your smile, your smell embraces me like a lover. This bed, my bed, our bed. There are no seconds wasted here. O baby

[Note: This is a work-in-progress, much like my apartment, and will be updated with new photos as I add stuff to my home.]

Awww Sweetheart! Your place looks beautiful (man, are you tidy or what?!! yes, yes I know, compulsive.)I especially love your ode to joy and your white roses on your love’s altar.

  2. zewt

wooah kenny… life really begins at 28 for you eh? i wonder if i can afford all that…

  3. Kok

    Kenny,
It’s glad to hear that everything is almost settled down for you! :)

  4. Kenny Mah

    Msiagirl,
Hey darling! Glad you dropped by my place (in a virtual-photo-blog sense, of course).

I’ll readily admit I’m compulsive and need my home to be über-tidy else I’d just freak out. Yet I’ll learn to deal with it when it isn’t… sometimes, it’s better that way — looks more lived in, and that’s what a home should be: lived in and a place you share with your loved ones.

Which is not to say it’s ready for “public” perusal yet. These are but a few views of it and I find them seriously wanting. Still. My home does bring me joy in so many ways…

P.S. I normally prefer yellow roses, warmer and more subtle in tones, but ah! white roses are so much more romantic… :)

  5. Kenny Mah

    Zewt,
Heh heh, I guess Life does begin at 28 for me. I almost forgot about my blog’s tagline till you reminded me. This is my Year of Being Happy, and all the years from now on.

As for affording all these, other than the rental which is really more than I should pay (but O so worth in, day-in and day-out, and especially on the weekends, ha), most of my stuff I buy on sale or rummage from second-hand shops.

Cheap can be good, that be my home-deco mantra. ;)

  6. Kenny Mah

    Hey Kok!!!

Bro, haven’t heard from ya in ages! Guess I’ve been very behind in my blog-reading. Howzit going with ya?

And “almost” settled down is right. :D

  7. sc

hey, your crib looks lovely! and so, so clean! really put mine to shame :(. guess it’s a blessing in disguise that your previous landlord decided to sell the house, else you would not be in seventh heaven now ;)

  8. spiffy

Gosh, Kenny… i am so NOT showing you a glimpse of my room! You’ll be shocked. My friend, Kendrick once told me.. “Grace, did a tornado pass by ur room or what!?!?” LOL…

Your new place is wonderful.. i’m really glad that you found it. Keep the pictures coming in ya… ;o)

  9. Kenny Mah

    sc
Uhm, being scrupulously neat doesn’t mean I’m equally anal about being clean. I should really scrub the whole place down more often. But oh well…

But yes. A blessing indeed. I am so in seventh heaven right now, so much so I can sing: “I’m in heaven, I’m in heaven…”

Off-key, but who really minds? ;)

  10. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
O one of those rooms, eh? A cyclone evacuation centre? LOL

Anyway, I wouldn’t normally advocate anyone to post photos of their rooms (kinda invasive, if you ask me) but I’d do it this time mostly cos I want to. To share in my delight of it. Mostly for me to revel in it. See? Very selfish one, me.

As for keeping the pictures coming in, er… I think I broke my digital camera. That’s why there isn’t a pic of the carpet which is one of my favourite features. See how la…

  11. spiffy

Hahaha…it’s not so bad now la, but still very messy. Heh..me mom’s been nagging me to clean me room up. =P

Aiyo…what did u do to ur poor digital camera? go fix it..or is it fixable? Haha..

  12. G

    yea

    (( hugs )) Gratzi!

  13. dieselfire

Muahahahahaha! Welcome to the world of having to do everything on your own! Lol!

Anyways, it’ll be fun but sooner or later you’ll find out why I agree with my mom of never moving out from their abode.
    :D Chill dude…

  14. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
No idea really. Will check it out this weekend and see if it can still function. If not, will have to pinch photos from others again for future blogs.

    G
    Uhm, preggo? *hugs back*

    dieselfire
True that. Cleaning up for one thing is a major hassle. And laundry. But then again, I’ve been out on my own for more than a decade already, so while I’ll never get used to it, it’s not gonna kill me.

    You evillynn you… :)

  15. FireHorse

Wow, I am impress, you reli have an eye for interior designing stuff. I’ve moved countless time that it became second nature liao, trick for me is not to unpack everything all at one go becoz soon I move again no need to repack.

  16. Kenny Mah

    FireHorse,
Mana ada interior designing? I wish I was good at it though. I salivate turning the pages of ID magazines and books the way the floggers drool at photographs of food.

As for me, I can’t help unpacking everything — it’s a great way for me to get rid of even more stuff! Reuse, recycle, replace, and just get rid of it! :)
I’d die if I had to move very often… too time consuming and soul-wrenching… LOL

  17. looks like ur bachelor pad is looking nice..take it 1 step at a time ok?

  18. Kenny Mah

    Joe with lots of cravings
One step at a time is right. Barely have enough time to breathe as it is. LOL

And bachelor pad? Well, I guess that’s what it is, eh? *sings the love shack song, off-key*

  19. patlow

awesome space :) you should totally (not) see my room. right now the laptop, sewing machine, telephone, books, caddies, paper mache dinosaur, cameras are all sharing an average-sized desk.

  20. Tummythoz

A super bc bachelor’s pad with no clutter. Spoil market, mien. Lucky me my mother does not know you.

  21. Kenny Mah

    Pat
Your room actually sounds fab… I love creative clutter that lives and breathes; shows magic is created right there.

Just cos I’m too anal to live with clutter myself (I’d actually get lost, serious), doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the subtle beauty in a glorious mess.

And I still remember this Smurfs poster (on hardboard) that I had in my bedroom as a kid — it said: GENIUSES ARE RARELY TIDY. Which was wicked cos my room always was. Tidy, I mean.

    (Kenny ain’t too smart, y’all.)

  22. Kenny Mah

    Tummythoz
Yea lucky you. Not so lucky were my various cousins whose moms used to parade them round my bedroom as a kid to show them what a bedroom should look like.

They had a hard time of it, but then again so did I, what with them staring daggers into my back the whole time. I have entire branches of blood relatives, now all grown up and in high & mighty places, who have yet to forgive me still.

    Ah, power corrupts, it does.

And what market lah? I might be a bachelor; it don’t mean I’m on the market. Not a piece of sirloin steak, you know. LOL

  23. dieselfire

I think it was so worth it to miss my mixer to move to a place on your own. You will be faced with challenges such as how well can you face yourself, etc… Urgh, I’m either being philosophical or rambling in the evening.

When’s the housewarming a.k.a when can I trash your place ?

  24. Kenny Mah

    dieselfire,
Gazooks! Why is everyone asking me about the housewarming? I thought you guys finally gave up hope on that? Let’s see…

    1. Gotta get the place perfectly done up the way I’m satisfied with it before I let a single soul set foot into my apartment. For fear of embarrassment, of course. Nothing at all to do with my own anal-retentiveness.

    2. Gotta be after the upcoming flurry of activity: Gosia & Manuel’s honeymoon, Henny’s birthday party, Meera’s engagement dinner, my getting some solo time to myself, etc. etc.

Anyway, you won’t be trashing my place, I’ll tell ya that. At 382 sq ft, there just ain’t the space. I’m thinking of a pool / barbecue party. Howzatsound?

  25. Msiagirl

    Stampede, Kenny, Stampede.

  26. wmw

Aiks….so nice and tidy! My spring cleaning is neverending. Congrats on getting your own pad! Enjoy the privacy!

  27. Kenny Mah

    Msiagirl
Now, now, you don’t want to give anyone the wrong idea, do you? Stampede, indeed. LOL

    wmw
O trust me, I am so enjoying the privacy. Hee.

P.S. Thank for taking my call on Sunday and suggesting the BKT place; I didn’t end up there after all but next time, I’d know where to go… :)

  28. ∙ enar ∙

hi kenny, congrats.like the way you put together your place! i moved into my own house last year and my hubby is a neat disciplined person whereas i thrive on chaos….

  29. Kenny Mah

    Enar
How are you, dear? It’s been awhile since we last exchanged comments.

I think sometimes opposites attract which can be a great thing. It’s looking for the few things that one can agree on that makes the magic, isn’t it? :)

  30. nice apartment! when’s the housewarming?

Im much better now, the gutturalness is nearly gone! Thank God!

  31. sulee

looks like a nice cozy place - enjoy your new home!

  32. Wa lau wei…a lurve altar. Damn romantic lar u.

Very pretty, Kenny. Glad I’m finally seeing it. ;-)

  33. Kenny Mah

    The Quiet Storm
Ah, good to hear that you’re much on the mend. O but your voice was sure über-sexy on the phone when it was a couple of octaves lower… ;)
As for the housewarming, eh, don’t hold your breath, dear. I’m such a slacker and procrastinator, it just might never happen. Or I could cave in to all the constant queries and simply call for one out of the blue.

    We’ll see…

  34. Kenny Mah

    sulee
    Thanks! And oh I am… ;)
    Lyrical Lemongrass
Aiyah, not lurve altar lah. Altar sound so pagan as if I’m carrying out all sortsa rituals and rites in my home. It’s just a place for me to put flowers or whatever else comes in handy, like my laptop even.

Still need your help with the 7-feet curtains for the balcony doors… Free this weekend for some shopping? I might meet up with Asstha (another blogger) who promised to take me shopping for men’s clothes this Sunday @ The Curve. Jom join?

  35. Vern

Hello! Phooyoh…mustn’t let mom see your photos.. then she’ll ask “how come your room cannot be as clean and tidy as that??” LOL

  36. mrshbt

    Kenny,

This is perhaps the most enjoyable article that I have read from your blog because it gave me a glimpse into your home.

I am not much of a reader. My family can testify that the reason I don’t wear glasses is because I was not much of a reader. Still not. However, I read your entire article, not skipping any word.

Looking forward to any addition to this article.

  37. moja

hohoho..enjoy your new crib, Kenny! gtg now, wanna clean up my room also! hahahaha.. so now, u can write us more n more nice blogs laa.. :)

  38. Kenny Mah

    Vern
Hello! Hee hee, I won’t held responsible for any mommy-enforced-bedroom-clean-up that results from viewing these photos… Uhm, I guess this is what they meant by Not-Work, er, Not-Home-Safe? LOL

    mrshbt
Wow, that’s big praise indeed coming from someone who’s not much of a reader, in your own words. Thank you for taking the time to read it, dear.

Hopefully, if I can get my camera working this weekend, I’ll add a couple more photos. :)
    moja
More and more nice blogs? Eh, no promises, bro but will try la… Have fun cleaning up your room! ;)

  39. PreciousPea

Wow!! Is that REALLY your room? So tidy…aiyooo…am so ashame of myself. U should come see my cupboard and bookshelf & drawers! On second thought, i take back the invitation..hehehe!

  40. Kenny Mah

    PreciousPea
Hey, invite already cannot un-invite one, you know! ;)
But yeah, that’s my apartment. A studio apartment which means ZERO rooms (except the bathroom, of course). Free-flowing space just the way I like it.

Now, if only my camera was working when I was having my candle-lit bubble bath with wine goblets of good red just within a soapy hand’s reach…

  41. PreciousPea

WAHHHHH!!!! Can imagine how relax you are in the bath tub..hahaha. so when are you going to invite floggers to trash your apartment? No house warming ar?

  42. Kenny Mah

    PreciousPea
Why suddenly the shift from “housewarming” to “trashing” my apartment? Not just you but the rest too.

Housewarming, yes, hopefully. But it’d be at the poolside lah, barbecue, again, hopefully. Apartment viewing to be arranged via advanced booking. LOL

Hey, viewing. I kill myself. Should I prepare popcorn & soda? :D

  43. PreciousPea

It’s always a tradition i guess to have a housewarming + trashing session. Bbq at the pool sounds fun. Maybe pot luck?

  44. Kenny Mah

    PreciousPea
Wah, what sort of tradition is that lah? Warm the house, then trash it? LOL

Yeah, I do think a barbecue at the pool would be great. It’s not a large pool but tastefully decorated with frangipani trees and two wooden verandahs with ready-built barbecue pits.

Pot luck could be interesting actually, esp to see what floggers might bring… ;)

  45. anigma

Aiyoh.. I so damn like the hedgehog on your bed!!

  46. Kenny Mah

    anigma
Heh, that hedgehog? It was a birthday gift from a couple years back. Now most people know how much I dislike stuffed toy animals (yes, I’m cruel and unhappy like that) but this was so cool cos it was a prickly beast that eats slimy slugs, except it isn’t alive but stuffed with… of all things… tissue paper!

See? Practical and prickly. Just like me. Uhm, except I’m not very practical and sensible. But still. Er, what was the original point again?

Anyway, hiya! Thanks for dropping by! :D

  47. jason

That’s a lovely, cosy little heaven of yours! I hate to be alone too.

  48. Kenny Mah

    Jason
Hey, bro! Welcome to the Klang Valley! Meena told me you’ve just moved here! Cool beans. We should catch up. Like, makan-style. :)
“I hate to be alone too.”
Actually I don’t mind being alone. Just don’t like being lonely. I guess there is a difference. We can be lonely even in crowds, but if your heart is filled with joy and anticipation and hope, it doesn’t matter if you are alone because you’re not, not really, not in spirit.

*and sings “that’s what friends are for”*

    LOL

  49. Msiagirl

If only your camera worked for your candlelight bubble bath ;) As an aromatherapist I recommend it! Next time, will also make you some bubble bath!

Seriously, do people have bubble baths in malaysia? Not too hot, ah?

    from Curious in UK

  50. Leen

All that verbiage just for moving house? I wonder how you’ll be if you’re in love heh. This post somewhat reminds me of your old Kenny blog.

Btw…I expected to be invited to your housewarming party, whenever *that* will be. Ahem.

  51. Yang-May

Hey Kenny, we all missed you-lah! Great you’re back in action again. Your new place looks delightful - like a really sleek modern luxury hotel. You got style-one.

  52. mrshbt

Is your camera not working? I was busy taking photo of my daughter playing in the sand. The camera broke right after she threw a handful of sand onto my face. Sand and lens don’t mix.

  53. tunkuhalim

It’s exciting to move into a new home, doubly exciting if it’s all yours! Congrats and enjoy the serenity…

  54. rubyahmad

    Hi Kenny,

Welcome back my friend. Wow! You came back with a personal bang! Getting your own personal pad..and that’s wonderful.

Kenny, we live life to the full as far as we can help it. When we are public, wo go public to the hilt. Like you I too need my private moments and what better way to unwind just the way we wanna in our own private space. I’m happiest in my (politically incorrect) worn-out ripped Ts and equally ripped pants, throwing away all the Ps and Qs..ahh, utter comfort. Ha ha. Cheers.

  55. Kenny Mah

    Msiagirl
    or, Dear “Curious in UK”

Yes, indeed Malaysians do have bubble baths. Usually in the comfort of their air-conditioned homes. Except I don’t have air-conditioning, and sometimes I get up in the middle of the night to switch off the fan cos it’s too cold for me.

I guess I get cold easily. Or, maybe I just like it hot;)

  56. Kenny Mah

    Leen
Verbiage is my middle name, after all. That and Larry.

The old Kenny blog? You mean the 2004 LiveJournal? It’s archived here, you know. So I guess I do know what you mean, sorta. It’s — altogether now — wistful. LOL

    Yang-May
Sleek modern luxury hotel? Far from it, my dear, far from it. I wish it were so, though. The bathroom’s quite hotel-ish though, if only I can get a couple of snaps of it up.

And as for style, I borrowed half of it from IKEA (O the shame!) and the other half from junk stores… Budget reigns supreme in my abode. LOL

  57. Kenny Mah

    mrshbt
Good lesson. Sand and lens not mixing, I mean. But my camera just stopped working one day. And I think I forgot to mail the warranty card. Aiyo…

    Tunku
Well, it’s not all mine lah. Rental only ma, not the owner… yet. One day, I’ll own my own place and O the things I’ll do with it! I guess I want to grow up to become an interior designer… only no one would hire me but myself! LOL

  58. Kenny Mah

    Kak Ruby
I’m glad to be back. Feels a tad odd still, blogging at a much slower rate, and only reading a few blogs a day. Catching up has been harder than I thought it’d be, esp with work still breathing down my neck.

    But I’ll survive. ;)
What you said about having a public and a private resonates with me. I try to be completely honest in communicating my public self, but my private life I intend to keep under wraps, as it should be. Some things are sacred and inviolable.

Like me prancing around my apartment in my tired old granddaddy pajama pants that’s always just about to slip off but never quite.

O you guys have no idea how silly I can get… :)

  59. dieselfire

Feed me food and I shall come to your housewarming…

    you’re having one, right ?

  60. PreciousPea

Wat food bloggers will bring for pot luck??? Camera and tastebud!

  61. Kenny Mah

    dieselfire and PreciousPea
At this point, I don’t even think it’s safe for me to say No to a housewarming… But not at the apartment lah. Too small.

I’m thinking of a pool party, barbecue by moi, all other dishes by pot luck (i.e. guests each bring something).

Drinks, well, Martell can sponsor or not if I call it a Food Bloggers Convention? (Or maybe Diet Cokes/green tea for all my BodyBalance/gym buddies.)

And, and, and… wait. Better check with The Management first whether I can get a reservation even… Of course, being the slacker & professional procrastinator that I am, you realise it’d probably August… 2008 before this happens, right? LOL

Anyone wanna volunteer to help me organise this thing? ;)

  62. hahaha remind me to dedicate tat song if we ever go karoake ok?

  63. Oooh I lurve parties. Food bloggers convention? Macam we gotta wear nametags, eh…haha. Hi I’m Lyrical Lemongrass and I’m an foodaholic….:-P

Btw, dinner last nite was lovely, dear. Well, not so much the food, but the company. :-)

  64. lydiateh

Nice place, Kenny. Wah, you’re really a new age kinda guy, ah. Candles and white roses and all, *swoons*

  65. asstha

    gosh kenny,

i really like ur hse le… so nice n cosy… n invitin… love dem tealites ohhh… and the white roses… i personally like champagne coloured ones but the white ones are purdy too ;)
dang man, your pics puts my room, wardrobe and car condition to shame… can only imagine wat my mom/aunt will say if they saw ur blog :P
yay… u hving potluck?? *woo hoo* i aso wanna join in can can can??? *blink blink blink*

i dun mind helping u out with the arrangements.. work will prolly ease up in July for me seein i’m startin at a new place and doubt they’ll overload me with work close my eyes, crosses finger, arms n legs

P.S. Sun still on tentatively rite? Call me to arrange the time yea ;)

  66. Kenny Mah

    Joe with lots of cravings
And what song is that lar?

    *scrolls up comments list furiously*

Ah, that one. Yeah, love the love shack song. Heh. But warn you first, brother, when I said off-key, I reallyreallyreally mean “off-key” wooi…

    Lyrical Lemongrass
Nametags would be a great idea! To keep track of all these anonymous bloggers and what not. Hi I’m Kenny Mah and my blog is called, er, Kenny Mah? LOL

By company during dinner last night, I’m guessing you mean me hor? ;)

  67. Kenny Mah

    Lydia
    *catches you as you swoon*

New age meh? I don’t like Enya wor… But you can count on me for candles and roses. I’m all over that. You know how some girls get handbags for their birthdays, and some guys receive porn, uhm, adult entertainment videos?

Me? I get candlesticks and candles… Seriously. Got scented, unscented, long ones, short ones, fat ones, thin ones, colour, no colour, you name it, I’ve received it.

Well, that and a prickly porcupine.

  68. ∙ imeau ∙

Hey, looking forward for more photos…as well as house warming session by the pool :)

  69. Kenny Mah

    asstha
Champagne coloured means its colour would be between yellow and white, right? Wow, I’d love to get those for a special night. Purdy… purdy suggestive… LOL

As for putting your room/wardrobe/car to shame… you haven’t seen how dirty my car is. No clutter, true, but dirty. I’m lazy lah… being an anal-retentive / obsessive-compulsive tidiness freak doesn’t mean I give two hoots about hygiene… LOL

Wah so many blinks one…. How to refuse? And can close eyes, cross fingers, arms and legs some more. You sure you don’t do yoga or pilates? LOL

You’re so helpful and kind lah… not sure what arrangements it’d be, but we are so on for this Sunday. Kenny-who-hates-shopping’s first shopping trip with a “fashion-makeover-consultant”.

Yes, I did just make that up. LOL. We should bring a camera and snap pics of me in posh clothes I can’t afford to buy… ;)

  70. Kenny Mah

    imeau!!!
Heya! So happy to see you drop by! But weird lah calling you by your nickname. How to pronounce? Like “emu” or “eem-oh”?

Wish you were available to take photos of my place once it’s done up. All the BodyBalance photos were fantastic! And hey, maybe can get you and the rest of the gang to perform a couple of tracks by the poolside. Would be so cool…

Wow, this is shaping up to be even better than my birthdays! I love succumbing to peer pressure! :D

  71. ∙ imeau ∙

Hey, you can still call me rachel. imeau is just my Chinese name :)
    You can pronounce this way…
    “i” + “meu”
However, don’t call me this way in person please. Only my hometown friends will call me by this name (although you are from the same hometown :-P)

Sure! I will love to take photos of your new place. Just let me know when is done! Or even partially done…haha!

Balance by poolside! Sound like a good idea! But, I will be the photographer and you guys pose lah!

  72. Kenny Mah

    Rachel then…
Easier to pronounce anyway. Ah now everyone knows we are from the same hometown. Malaccans Rule!!

Yea, I doubt it would ever get “done” so partially done will have to do. You’d have to make something half-past-six look like a full 12 o’clock (whatever that means)! LOL

Balance by the Pool… Sounds like a fantastic photoshoot, dunnit? Or even better, video… ;)

  73. Tummythoz

Hi5 precious pea! Oh, let’s do that on d other hand too!
Kenny, no nid to scroll up. Obviously it’s about your impending house warmthentrashing do. Yup. Will definitely bring tastebuds & camera!

  74. Kenny Mah

    Tummythoz
Right now I’m more itching to design an invite for the housewarmthentrashing do than actually organising it, which might be a headache.

Tapi if put invite on my blog, what if all the blog lurkers and spammers turn up? Aiyoyo, like that kena call security di…

Though techinically that means Nisa and Henny and Jason are out too, since they only lurk and never comment… LOL

  75. Argus

Wah, already so many comments. I’m late, as usual. So nice to have your own place, ya, Kenny? A respite from the world, a place exactly how you like it, no need to cater for someone else’s taste. Cute hedgehog too.

  76. Kenny Mah

    Argus
“A respite from the world, a place exactly how you like it, no need to cater for someone else’s taste.”

That’s exactly it! You put it perfectly, better worded in one sentence than my whole entry altogether. It’s this feeling of “It’s mine, it’s mine, it’s me.”

Only problem is, it’s nowhere near where I want it to be. Time and budget the usual constraints. That and I am no Interior Designer.

    And then there’s the hedgehog… ;)

  77. Kok

    Kenny,
Long time never hear from you too! haha! Guess you must be busy.

I’m currently sticking my eyes with those super thick books. Exam over here. I hope to get everything done and go for a holiday. At the same time, hope I’ll pass everything!

  78. spiffy

Seriously, Kenny..don’t think it’s quite a gud idea to put ur invitations here..what with spammers, strangers, lurkers and what nots..unless u dun mind “the more the merrier”..but then again, u having a housewarming is not a secret anymore. LoLzz..

send out ur invitations thru e-mails or sms.. safer, no?

    *sheesh..i sound old..*

  79. Kenny Mah

    Kok
Yeah, I guess we have both been real busy, me with work and you with exams. Trust me, I remember those super thick books. *shudders*

Wish you all the best — I’m sure you will pass everything — and do go get a break! You sure do deserve a holiday after all the midnight burning oil / candles burning at both ends / whatever other metaphors I can come up with. LOL

Don’t forget to start cooking and taking photos of your dishes again after the exams; I believe we have the making of a fine food blogger in you! ;)

  80. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Maybe you’re right. That and I can’t possibly cater for an unknown amount of people. Cos even if I make it potluck, I still need to ready the meats and stuff for the barbecue, right?

    O pening nye…

First thing to do will to be to find a weekend slot that I am free first, check with the Management, then only send the invites out. Emails and SMSes would probably be safest, yeah.

And don’t worry lah, you don’t sound old, just sensible. Me, I’m old and not sensible some more… Haiya…

  81. spiffy

Yep, and u also gotta get everyone to tell u what food they’re bringing or if possible, list out what food you want, then let ur guests choose..u wudn want half of the people to be bringing fried chickens, sausages or fried bee hoon…Heheh..

It wun be pening, dun worry..if u need help, can always give me a ring..;o) sometimes the management charge per head or they might limit the number of people..check with them then start from there lor..^_^

Now i’m starting to ask u what to do pulak.. aduii..*paiseh* i’m sure u noe what to do..=)

  82. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Heh, would you believe I already have a couple of volunteers to help me plan this? I suspect this was the only way they could make sure it actually happens, as I’m inclined to be lazy and procrastinate and the whole thing ends up not happening at all.

Seriously though, I’m not so much into housewarming but this would be a great excuse to see all my different friends together in one setting.

Plus, I want to PARTY!!!! *sniggers*

  83. spiffy

Hahaha…so u’ve got it all covered. Great!! There..no need to pening already. =D

    yeah…Party all the way dude!!

  84. I’m just coming for the alcohol. If there’s a party. If I’m invited.

  85. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Well, I wouldn’t say I got it all covered. It won’t be happening anytime soon, I can tell ya that. And there’s always a need to pening one…

    Lyrical Lemongrass
There will be alcohol. (Just don’t scare away the bartender by flirting with his, uhm, shots?)

There is a party. (Just don’t know when.)

You are invited. (But only if you promise not to behave.)

  86. Uber-sexy voice? LOL! I thought I sounded like some transvestite that just got kicked in the balls! LOL!

So you’ve decided to have the housewarming after all! Yays!!!

  87. Kenny Mah

    The Quiet Storm
LOL! That sure is some description of your voice! I don’t think I can top that. I’ll say this though: it helped knowing what a sexy lady was on the other end of the phone line. ;)
And yeah, the housewarming aka pool party barbecue aka no-idea-when-it’ll-happen. But when it does happen, you are so invited.

Have a great weekend, dear! :D

  88. MeiyeN

your home sweet home looks beautiful, i like it! :D

  89. Kenny Mah

    MeiyeN
Thank you, dear. I like it too. :D

  90. chia

nice nice! I definitely understand the feeling of finding a ‘home’. Have been travelling and moving a lot. I do feel home everywhere I go, KL, PEnang, Bangkok, US.. Everywhere means something.. Home’s at ur heart I believe :)

  91. G

    MiniMalist! Woot!

    U Roxxorz!

    — leet speak to the max.

Yes. I’m losing brain cells as I use the cellphone more and contrary to experimentation, I’m getting dumber working everyday.

    I hates me life.
    :D
    (( hugs ))

  92. Kenny Mah

    chia
I know what you mean. Home is where the heart is. And my heart is here. :)
    Thanks for dropping by, dear.

    G
Hahaha… love how you went from “I hates me life” to a big Smiley. You’re such an idiot, dude. But in a very good way.

Minimalist is right though. It’s called Malaysian-Boy-No-Money-Minimalist. LOL.

And I hate cellphones too, but can’t live without mine just yet. Anyone wants to sponsor my early financial retirement? Anyone?

  93. ∙ imeau ∙

Don’t worry, just leave it to me. I will surely make your home look like heaven on earth.

I am ok with video or still. But, I am a little lazy to digitize video shot and edit the video. :P Raw shot is usually not nice to see as it is. Best thing about video is the funny shot like NG is fun to watch.

However, fun was not part of the Body Balance ascent :) We should feel calm and centered all the time…like inhale and exhale…

Oh, one funny comment I got from my class…
“Can you say something else other then inhale and exhale” hahaha…

Anyway, I always prefer still compare with motion. Still photo enable our imagination to run wild while video, tell you all you need to know. ;)

  94. Kenny Mah

    Rachel
I haven’t even yet manage to return you the many favours you’ve done me, and already here’s another one! You are such a sweetheart, dear. *muacks*

I kinda agree with what you said about video vs. still. I too prefer stills cos it left so much more to one’s imagination, though sometimes the imagination may run too wild for my own good, hahaha.

Still, if we are to do a BodyBalance performance at the pool party, best not to do it to near the edge of the pool with this lot around us… Otherwise, we really need to “inhale, then exhale”… mouthfuls of water! ;)

  95. Eliza

Congratulations, kenny. Nothing like your own space to decorate and live in…I’ve got loads of home decor mags, if you want to borrow. :-)

  96. Msiagirl

Happy Weekend and Happy Shopping :)

  97. mrshbt

Sorry. My previous comment was just FYI only, not to be published.

  98. Kenny Mah

    Eliza
Oh do not tempt me! ;)
I love browsing through home decor mags… esp the more bachelor pad-ish ones, you know, more modern and sleek and minimalist… But the cluttered, messy, old English libraries/studies are great too.

Thanks, and I shall take you up on your offer the next we meet! :)
    Msiagirl
Thanks, you too! Shopping trip with Asstha maybe postponed as I have something on, but who knows? I might just make it, or drag another friend along.

    Kenny needs clothesss…. LOL

  99. Kenny Mah

    mrshbt
    Your previous comment?

*scrolls up, and up, and up*

The last comment you made was on sand and camera lens. Is this the one you meant? Seems harmless to me.

Or did it get swallowed up by the spam filter? I checked this morning and there was no spam comments at all, which is suspicious in itself, since normally, the filter catches over 100 a day!

Do let me know if it’s this comment that you mean, dear.

  100. I love minimalist, but mum keeps thinking that my Philippe Starck coffee table is plastic and wants to replace it with some generic wooden piece. haha.

Have a good weekend, Kenny. Mine’s promising to be good. I’m staring at a GORGEOUS bacon & mushroom quiche baked by fatboybakes which i’m bringing for a party tonight. *wide grin*

  101. cutebanana

such nice cozy place, can i share it with ya ? ‘wink… wink…’

  102. teckiee

Nice to have a place you can all “my own space”. The pokiepine looks so cute! ..even got its own crash pad, NICE ;)

  103. Kenny Mah

    Lyrical Lemongrass
Let your mom replace with a wooden one lah, then you can give me the kayu version and keep your original meja kopi ma… ;)
Weekend’s great so far. No gorgeous bacon & mushroom quiches but plenty of fun and glory. Attended, or rather, caught portions of the Miracle ‘07 Launch at The Curve… all sweaty hot bodies pumping it out in public in skimpy gymwear. LOL

Later last night, even had a dry run of a certain sing-a-long scene from a certain movie — you know which one I mean — with Nisa at her home at one a.m. waking up her neighbours and domestic animals all round.

We went for six times some more. With me off-pitch all the way. Oy vey.

  104. Kenny Mah

    cutebanana
Share ar? While it’s always good to share and give, this round, I don’t think soooo…… Alllll Miinnnneeee…. LOL

    teckiee
Pokie-pine? Aiyo, what does it poke, eh? ;)
Okay, off to enjoy the rest of the weekend. Actually woke up this morning thinking it was Monday. SHOCKERS!! But then realised it was Sunday and I got a huge smile on me face. Now off to gym for BodyCombat (new launch) and trust me, my body will prolly be whining for the rest of the week… In other words, the usual lah…

Have a great Sunday, Everyone! :D

  105. spiffy

    Kenny,
No rush for the housewarming party..as long as it’s confirmed on. Heheh..;o)

I’m with Lyrical Lemongrass on this..”I’m just coming for the alcohol. If there’s a party. If I’m invited..Also, also..to cuci mata.” LOLz.z..

    Have a splendid Sunday..!

  106. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Gave it much thought over the past couple of days and decided: Yes, it’s on, but No, it won’t be anytime soon. Probably early August. Will give some time to finish some of my pending projects that keep swallowing up my weekends!

And it’s gonna be such a whirlwind of activities and events for me over the next few weekends, I’ll probably need a break just to recover from that! :)
As for cuci mata, O trust me, there will be plenty… ;)
P.S. The new BodyCombat release is fantastic… I love track 5 (choreographed to McFly’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”) — it’s so much fun! I was singing alone under my breath during the whole class and smiling all the way.

P.P.S. Msiagirl & Lyrical Lemongrass: And I was a complete HSS at the end of one hour of BodyCombat — Hot, Sweaty Slob! LOL

  107. spiffy

heyy..early August is better than nothing. I’ll trust u on that Kenny..if i tak dapat cuci mata, then i’ll bug u the whole night long. Heheh..

Hahah..u gotta have lotsa energy to work out and sing at the same time. *Salute!*

  108. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Lotsa energy is right! That and I can help it. Being full of song is an infectious thing… *grins silly grin*

Anyway, it’s much easier singing along while jumping up and down and kicking in BodyCombat than it is to do the same while holding some of the tough poses during BodyBalance.

They are such different programs — one so calm and centred, the other aggressive and furious, very yin/yang — but they “complete” me… LOL

  109. Msiagirl

hahaha glad to hear you are keeping up your gym! Did you get some skimpy gymwear from the Curve yesterday? Might keep you cooler…

  110. spiffy

    As always, Kenny..as always..=D

  111. Kenny Mah

    Msiagirl
Yeah, me too. Finally getting back to the gym, though not quite returned to my normal routine yet. Much like blogging and reading blogs. ;)
No gymwear, skimpy or otherwise. LOL. Later will pick Nisa up from Borders once I’m finished with this top secret cookbook design I’m doing (hah! me? top secret?) and she’ll drag me round shopping. Maybe I’ll even model some for her… If she’s lucky… ;)
    spiffy
    Wocka, wocka! LOL

  112. asstha

    ohh… so that’s why i got stood up :(
    bad kenny… ;)
btw… champagne coloured roses are more like peachy in colour den yellowish white… smells great too dat’s why they’re my favourite.

i’ll post up pics IF my bf remembers to send it to me for my upcoming birthday. i sorta demanded requested him to buy me champagne and blue roses for my birthday… :P

  113. Kenny Mah

    asstha
Peachy? Then I’d stick to my whites and my yellows then. Problem of being a guy is that no one ever figures to buy you flowers… So kesian. LOL

  114. spiffy

Kenny, speaking of flowers..my cousin(not Benny) has a habit of buying flowers to be put at home too..i don’t know what they’re called tho..

Hmm..metrosexual guys nowadays have a thing for flowers ah? ^_^

  115. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
Metrosexual? Me? I can hear Nisa in the background dying from laughing…

Take shoes for example — I only have three pairs (one for work, one for gym — badminton shoes some more, and one pair of RM3.00 flip-flops I bought from Carrefour).

Doesn’t sound too much like a male version of Imelda Marcos, eh?

  116. spiffy

Hahahhaha….but u have flowers at home. That’s gotta be something..You’re on ur way to being the new-age metrosexual. =D

Shoes can always buy more..maybe u shud go shopping with my cousins, note the ’s’ at the end of cousin. Heheh..

  117. Kenny Mah

    spiffy
But I don’t have flowers at home lah. Not normally. That was for a special occasion.

And I hate shopping. Loathe it. Which is why I need people to drag me along just so I don’t end up dressed in rags… kesian nye Kenny… LOL

  118. spiffy

    Aduii…Hahaha..;o)

  119. asstha

    kenny,

dat’s bcos u dun hv asstha as a gf
i sent a dozen of my favourite (yes the peachy n blue ones) to my ex (dat time my current squeeze la) last year for his birthday.

order it to be sent to his office i did.

hey, don’t knock it till u see it… the colour is really hard to describe and dat’s d only way i cud think of to explain it to u in the best way… i’ll mail d pics “if” my bf remembers to send it (he’d better if not he’s so dead)

oh… so u need ppl to drag u along… no wonder the cancellation… wait… wait til i start my new job n see… i’ll hound u like a hound dog.. until u go shoppin for some togs with me
*dis is the part wer kenny regrets asking me to bring him shoppin*

  120. Kenny Mah

*feels so weird discussing flowers with not one, but TWO girls*

    *gets over it*

    asstha
That’s true; possibly not having you as my girlfriend would be a life-debilitating experience that will render all forms of enjoyment pointless and dispensable. Possibly.

Ah but I dig girls who would sent flowers to boys. Heh.

Cancellation was due to work that I had to slip in between my BodyCombat class and meals and some freelance design stuff.

But I also had fun, amazingly enough. Too much, in fact. But I’m not too greedy. I’m happy with what I receive. Will work on giving more.

Shopping next! I still need jeans that fit. Clothing in general that fit, really. I’ve finally realised, after a year of denying it, that I am much thinner than I used to be and my clothes look way too baggy on me.

Me no look good. O asstha make me look good. Please? :D

  121. thewailer

a morning doldrum here too in antwerp but it’s all good :)

  122. Kenny Mah

    thewailer
It’s all good is right, is the spirit! :D
The day can’t get us down if we don’t let it. Cheers!

  123. Vince Lim

    hey Ken,

thanks for the comment. No worries about not being able to pop by my blog, not many pple read mind except for my friend gary -aikuchi, is all. So, i linked to yours through his and checked out his links. heh!

Yea..just the usual humdrum drama from management who clearly have no proper people skills sometime and who thinks us office slaves are merely robots! headache!

yea..a smile is apt..so is laughing it off. thank god for youtube and Will & Grace.

    ok..ranting.. going… ciao

    Vince

  124. Kenny Mah

    Vince
Us office slaves robots? Never! Say it ain’t so! Heh heh heh.

Seriously though, I just read a couple of articles in The Sun today — one about CEOs with double standards (duh!) and the other about how being task- and goal-oriented may make us blind to opportunities.

So, being robots ain’t so good for our fame and fortune, after all. Go figure. Wonder how William Gates did it.

  125. kak teh

kenny - nice place and pix! did msia girl convey my hug to you?

  126. Kenny Mah

    Kak Teh
Thanks, glad you like it too! :)
And yes, Msiagirl made sure I got a great big hug from you! Miss you here and hope to catch up with you again soon! *hugs some more*

  127. ∙ alice ∙

    I. want. to. have. a. place. like. yours. So cozy ambience. I want to be single again!! Tired of tidying up the house, esp. with a hubby who doesn’t put back his things and then asked me where his things are.

  128. Kenny Mah

    Alice
Single might be nice for awhile but not that much fun if you don’t have someone to cuddle up to in bed when night arrives. O what I’d do for that special someone to be by my side…

I guess marriage, like all relationships, is about compromise, and trust me, I have to learn to compromise too… but it’s surely no sacrifice when one is so happy… :D

  129. Kleio

Wowzer! Your home’s looking good. Simply yet elegant. Very tastefully done. Love the flowers and just like Anigma, I love that hedgehog too ;)
Glad to see that you are loving this private sanctuary of yours.

  130. Kenny Mah

    Kleio
Thanks, and I guess the hedgehog’s more likeable than I gave it credit for. Maybe this will start a new trend in home deco — Hedgehogs! You Know Your House Needs One!
And it’s not just me who’s loving this private sanctuary… the Honeymooners (Gosia & Manuel) dropped by last Sat/Sun and they loved it too! And it’s going to be where they’ll be staying on their last night of their honeymoon a week and a half from now when they return from the islands and before they head back to Italy.

I’d be staying somewhere else for the night, naturally… ;)

  131. Zaty

    white roses!!! pretty =)

and the book arrangement… fuhh. i can never be able to manage to keep it that tidy longer than a day, unless i don’t ever touch it. heheh.

  132. Kenny Mah

    Zaty
I love white roses. Even more so, yellow roses, but those are hard to find… there are more ‘champagne’-coloured ones, which for some reason I don’t like, hahaha.

As for the books? I’m so anal I put them back where I found them. :P
