Night of the Angels

BodyBalancers: Ben, Rachel & me

Everyone’s been complaining lately that I’ve been turning down their invitations — to movies, wedding dinners, vacations, and of course, more Christmas parties than you can shake a snowglobe at. (Am I the local Scrooge? Am I so deprived of the jolly ol’ spirit of the season?)

So it surprised not a few that I attended the Fitness First Group X Party 2007 last Saturday, held at Cathay Cineleisure Damansara. It was to be a night of food, drinks, making merry and a movie to cap it off! And what better chance to catch up with other instructors in a fun, relaxing but (for once) non-gym environment?

Theme for the evening was “Night of the Angels” and everyone came out in full British India-inspired regalia. I have never seen so many people in white linen and colonial wear. Some of the instructors whom I’ve only seen before in hardcore gym attire were now sensually softened by yards of cotton lace and flowy skirts. Beautiful…

(Of course, some of the male instructors were in swishy, flowy skirts too. Perhaps more than the ladies, come to think of it. And sometimes it takes more than a single pair of hands to wrap them darn oceans of cloth around a guy’s waist. Ahem. Yes.)

We chatted. We mingled. We were very loud. (What do you expect from a group of people who have to shout daily to their classes, simply to be heard over the pumping roar of the music?) We ate. A lot. (What do you expect from a group of people who burn more calories from multiple classes than… than… well, than the average Joe, no?)

We played games. Famous characters seek each other out. (We had our identities labeled on our backs, so we had to guess.) I was James Bond and I found my Q. (Why I couldn’t have ended up with Honey Ryder or Holly Goodhead or the queen of Bond Girls — Pussy Galore — is an eternal mystery for another time.)

Then came the highlight of the night: the movie. We had an entire theatre reserved specially for us and it was to be Will Smith’s latest, “I Am Legend.” Remember how I mentioned earlier we were very loud? That definitely continued in the cinema. With popcorn missiles flying all over and loads of cam-whoring in the dark. Kids.

And this being more of a zombie flick than a sci-fi film, there were a lot of silent screams and oddly appropriate guffaws throughout the movie. I found myself sliding down my seat during certain, uhm, more intense moments of the film, only to find my neighbours on either side of me had slid down even further. (Wimps love company?)

When the movie ended, everyone agreed that it was very “stressful” watching it. Fortunately, the same couldn’t be said of the party, which was some of the most fun I’ve had in ages.

Fitness instructors rock, yo. :)

  • No halo no wings no flimsy loin cloth? Just in long white shirt, how boring. *shout in hiding since can never outrun gym instructor*.

  • Tummythoz
Now what makes you think there weren’t any flimsy loin cloth? Some pictures aren’t that, uhm, work-safe ma… ;)

And you know what they say, “You can run, but you can’t hide.”

*sound of stampede of gym instructors on the hunt for this hiding heckler*

  • not fair..haha now where do i get that application form to bcome an instructor haha? i just want to burn the calories..

  • Hi there :)
Thx for dropping by my blog ;)
    Have a nice day!!

  • lotsofcravings
Hehe… you can burn calories just fine from attending the classes. Being an instructor just means add stress to the calorie-burning equation, no?

Anyway, do you go for classes or hit the treadmill only? Variety definitely helps with the Burnnnn… ;)

Glad to… food blogs are what satiates me in between my actual meals… all 6–8 of them each day (my meals, not food blogs).

  • Ah…so you are indeed an instructor. Never seen your name for any classes tho…

  • Wow looks like somebody is having loads of fun! Hehehe!

  • Isn’t this the season for those snow-winter-homecoming-santa clause believing-mistletoe kissing-ho,ho,ho movies? or Enchanted at least?

I am legend? what were you guys thinking? hahaha!

  • Piggles
Nah, I’m only a trainee instructor… you won’t be seeing my name for any classes anytime soon, not with my busy work schedule… don’t have time to practice the choreography and what not.

But my boo has insisted that I work on clearing as an instructor and with that kind of encouragement, who knows? 2008 may surprise me yet…

    Nastasshea @ Nesh
Yes, finally having FUN again! :D

    Nic (KHKL)
Yeah, I wish it was “Enchanted” (still haven’t caught it yet, saving it till this weekend with my boo). But we didn’t have much of a choice really; it was a sponsored movie night… beggars can’t be choosers, right? ;)

  • Stressful is right, Kenny. The movie i mean.. went with my younger bro and my other half. You can imagine my brother covering his eyes almost the whole way thru.. and me.. i had someone next to me holding my hands tight & telling me..“they’re coming. they’re coming… close ur eyes.” hahah…

but i had tears rolling down my cheeks when Sam died..*snif* *sniff*

Ya, ya… I think most of us were very sad to see Sam go… for me, the movie went downhill from there onwards.

However, having a theatre chock full of noisome instructors more than made up for it. I remember one part when it was very “tension” and someone went “shh, shh!” — and of course some smart aleck had to go, “Eh, buat I mahu kencing lah!” (“Makes me wanna piss!”)

  • Hahahha.…. i guess that’s what happens when u go watch movie with a whole bunch of friends. Tension also turn into not tension ady..

  • Spiffy
Hehe, that’s true. Remember the part when Will Smith was talking to the female mannequin in the DVD store and asking her to please say Hello to him. He was so deranged and desperate at that point.

Suddenly we heard a “Hello.” But the mannequin didn’t move her lips. Aiyo… was one of the instructors only… This like adding extra voiceovers to the movie, haha.

  • i would’ve laugh out loud if i were there.. haha… free voiceovers summore.. ;o)

  • Spiffy
Yalor yalor… at least fitness instructors are a funny, happy bunch… Last round before this, I was watching the “Golden Compass” with my boo, and a couple next to us were taking the time to discuss the movie as the movie was being played out…

Haiyo, if I wanted a play-by-play, I would have stayed at home with a DVD, man. I guess that’s the risk you take for choosing the couple seats (which we chose cos they were the only decent ones left with a view of the screen that didn’t require us to crank our necks 45 degrees backwards) — colourful, creatively clueless commentators or let’s-make-out-in-the-dark-even-if-it’s-still-a-public-area-ers.

    Sheesh.

  • Yeah… tell me bout it. I went and watch Enchanted and there was this guy & a girl laughing loudly on my left… and 3 aunties chatting and laughing so loudly on my right!

I mean.. wanna chit chat go to the mamak stall la for heaven’s sake. Sometimes i get so irritated that i’ll just make a loud “shhhh…!!” noise.

  • Spiffy
Hahaha… I wonder if they’ll turn to you and ask you, “Nak kencing ke? Tandas kat luar lah, ah moi…” (“Need to pee? The loo’s outside, dear…”)

I’m so watching “Enchanted” this weekend. Cyclops in fluffy shoulder pads and tights running around Central Park and singing. What more can one ask for sheer entertainment value?

  • oh yes.. must agree fitness instructors rock cause my friend is one of them lol.. and you must watch enchanted! love it soooooooo much! ;) so.. how’s legend? stress because of da movie or because of da crowd? ;)

  • MeiyeN
Oh yet another vote for me to catch “Enchanted” … can’t wait for this weekend, or even tomorrow, if I can manage it. :D

As for “I Am Legend”, the movie itself is rather stressful — dreadfully slow in some parts and didn’t make too much sense in others. But. I did enjoy it, largely due to the crowd I was with.

It’s true what they say, good company makes everything better. :)

  • Oh no! You have my pictures all over! Isn’t that sexy picture supposed to be P&C? I felt cheated… *shy*

Yeah…everything is good that night, accept the stressful movie.

Kenny, you guess it right. I can’t sleep for the night even I am dead tired. Replaying in my mind was the scene where the “darkseeker” anxiously waiting to jump out from the building as the last stream of sunlight disappear from the horizon. It wasn’t something sweat to think about when you are trying to sleep.

So, I have my Sunday walking like a zombie craving to sleep. Yet, to ensure I won’t have nightmare, I ended up watching the “Enchanted” DVD to overwrite my memory of the “Darkseeker”. Somehow, it works! Maybe I am just too tired to think about anything by the time I hit the bed.

  • imeau
Where can P&C… good stuff must share-share with the rest of the world, right? (That and seriously most of the other photos didn’t turn out that well; yours were the best… benefit of being my angel, I guess, hehe.)

And I suppose you answered everyone’s questions on how “stressful” the movie was, haha. I never get tired of watching zombie flicks but this one was just draining somehow… And I miss Sam… so brave, no? :(

  • Yeah, I wish Sam with him untill the end…
