Nisa the Diva

Dear Nisa (a.k.a. The Diva),

Where on Earth are you?

Well, I actually have the answer to that one. Some city called Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Where you have been whisked off for a month (then a month and a half, now possibly two months tops, and we are beginning to fear the worst for you) on some high-falutin’ consulting project. Answering that part is easy.

The tough part is handling the day-to-day realities of your not being here.

Perhaps you have been away for so long now, that you may have forgotten about us, your family. The Family. Not your flesh and blood perhaps, but the family we made together, us four poor singletons stuck in the Big City, far away from our hometowns and loved ones.

Henny, Nisa, Jason and Kenny. The Datin, The Diva, Boyboy and me. And now we are but three.

Remember when we used to play our game of ‘musical chairs’ over dinner? When only three of us can make it to mealtime, and we would be sitting at a table in a fancy restaurant or a roadside mamak, and there will always be a fourth chair, vacant to represent the missing family member? How we would point towards the chair when speaking lovingly of the one not present, and of course, when we would gossip gleefully about him or her.

You see, Family can do this. There is no malice when we know each other this well. We each take turns to be the much-maligned topic of conversation. There is no ill-will here, only love.

For we know each other too well, and we know too much also, sometimes. We are terrible at keeping secrets. Like the time I told you I broke up with my boo (and was under no circumstances to repeat it to another member of the Family), you managed to let slip to Jason ever so casually. And he, in turn, somehow repeated this to Henny. And in under an hour, the Datin was on my case, interrogating me — O we can’t be trusted with secrets, no!

Yet we continue to share our lives and loves with each other — evenings and weekends and holidays will see us clustered like hamsters around a hearth; it’s Family Time, we tell each other; we’ve had enough of Work, Dating and Diets That Fail (Yet Again).

Family Portrait

Family Portrait: Do you remember how happy we were?

How you or The Datin would cook for us, and I would wash up the dishes (official duties to my fair ladies), and Jason… well, Jason would sit in front of the TV and watch Astro, mostly. (Outsiders would insist this is because he is the youngest and we pamper him so, but we heartily disagree: it’s only cos we haven’t found a way to make him move, yet.)

These days, however, not so. Musical chairs can’t be played when it’s the same threesome over and over again. We tire of each other. We long for your spontaneous sense of the inappropriate, your masculine sneers and how you will find joy in physically abusing Jason and I. Your high sense of drama. (We don’t call you The Diva for nothing.) How you would coerce us into watching lame and brain-drained chick flicks… and have us laughing and peeing our pants by the end of the movie.

O dear Nisa: Where on Earth are you?

You will come back one day, won’t you? Don’t wait too long; we may not survive. Or we may jolly well audition for a replacement.

(Wanted: Twentysomething female with brilliant, white teeth, perfectly-coiffed hair, legs that linger till eternity, an hourglass figure, a PhD or two, a plethora of credit cards to take fellow Family members out fine dining, … what? I said a replacement. Doesn’t have to be the same Diva. If we’re replacing her, we might as well get an upgrade, right?)

I jest, my dear. (Mostly.)

Come back to us, my love. Come back to us…

Aiyah.. 20 something? I am over it already. Your criteria for a new family member are very discriminating to me! Haha! Well, I am sure the Diva is irreplaceable!

Such a lovely tribute for a friend. :D

  2. tonixe

the heart achkes 4 a long lost love , that hurts bad. of course cure for this kind of deep thing is many moons away. Replacement is impossible but the nex enlightentment shud be even more fulfilling , for sure

  3. zewt

  4. Jun

ur longing for her return and that $1 reward somehow seem contradictory… ;p

ps: better still, go jeddah and visit her! :D

  5. ∙ Nisa ∙

You know I don’t read your blog right. Suddenly today I feel like checking out what has been going on in your life…..then…. I’m wanted on your blog!!!!*the drama begins*….. I’m going to cry….

Im very stessed up here the project is killing me.

Hehe, the criteria for the Replacement Diva was for a lark… Certainly she’s irreplaceable, and we would very intimidated by such a candidate if she existed!

Being a Family member isn’t about a sexy body or surplus brains, but simply being comfortable around each other, always good for a laugh and a cry, and simply being there for each other. :)

My dear, I think you may have misunderstood. Nisa’s my best friend, not a girlfriend who’s gone and absconded to the Middle East.
As for long lost love, I don’t believe in pining for it per say. If it meant something, we should celebrate it and remember, but not obsess over it to the extent of forgetting to live the days since.

Better yet, retain that love if possible — friendship can grow sometimes where romance has lost its chance. And this, too, is love.

We sure hope so. Come back to us, dear Diva. Come back to us…

    Jun
Hehe, I was wondering if anyone would notice that $1 reward…
That part was a joke, since Nisa does have a healthy sense of humour. I bet she’s longing to smack me now on the arm for putting up such a low figure. O well, I am but a measly wage-earner… Hehe.

  9. Nic (KHKL)

you have to let love go to own love, i once heard in a song. and i believe it! well, guess its appicable to friendship too…make a tune out of the words and hum it everyday…you’ll feel better :D
seeing your friend, Nisa’s reply sure is a relief for you, i guess. keep hanging tough there, ya!

  10. Kenny Mah

    Nisa
Uhm, yes. I do know you don’t read my blog.

(You and the rest of The Family. But I’m used to that. The Datin’s rationale would simply be that she would rather get the stories straight from the horse’s mouth. Whatever.)

But please don’t cry. The weather’s probably sweltering enough there without you getting dehydrated by weeping excess liquid out of your system.

Do promise me you’ll take care of yourself, dear.

P.S. I am so not eating those calorific confections without you scorfing them down too! :P

  11. Kenny Mah

    Nic (KHKL)
Well, I’m not sure one can own love or even own friendship. Love and Friendship — just is, I suppose.

Isn’t it weird? I have learned that some friends can miss each other more than even lovers do. Perhaps that is a good thing.

Not sure if I’d make a tune of those words though and hum it. Haven’t I mentioned before I’m tone-deaf?

  12. ∙ swee ∙

    Hi Hi..

Awesome works. Love it. Enjoy Reading it so much.

  13. Is ur hand resting on what it appears to be on your picture? Naughty naughty..

Yes, friends that goes off can be quite sad if they form a part of your life..worse still seeing them have fun! thank god u didnt post things u been doing without her!

  14. Kenny Mah

    swee
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
    lotsofcravings
My hand? Oh, my hand… It does have a habit of wandering off by itself. I have absolutely no control over it… :P
“thank god u didnt post things u been doing without her!”
Oh trust me, I have been refraining from doing exactly this. No need to rub it in her face all the Fun we’ve been having… Oopsies.

  15. Kenny, yes, will be in KL April 17th and April 18th…Precious Pea sent out an invite to King Crab…not sure if you are on the Yahoo group flogger listing. Please connect with her directly, she is organizing.

    Can’t wait to meet.

  16. Kenny Mah

    Rasa Malaysia
Yup, I just got the invite last night on Facebook. It says April 24th though. Which date is correct?

Can’t wait to meet ya either! :D

  17. Kenny Mah

    Rasa Malaysia
Just got off the phone with Precious Pea… it’s the 22nd now… Tuesday. Even better, we get to meet earlier! :D
    I’ll be bringing a crab-hungry pal…

  18. tigerfish

So should it be WANTED…for Crabs…now? A few crabs will be missing in action soon, I foresee. :P Well, $1 is definitely more for crabs than a real friend, right?

Heee…just teasing your conversation with RM.

  19. Kenny Mah

    tigerfish
OH NO… I doubt we can get the crabs we’re feasting on for $1… you might want to add several zeros behind that ‘1′, dear. ;)

  20. ∙ Neil ∙

i’m not a twentysomething female but can i apply? hehe…

  21. Kenny Mah

    Neil
    Uhm… No? :P
Anyway, Nisa has informed us she has no intention of vacating her position as The Diva and would fight anyone who dares usurp her throne rather ruthlessly. A catfight may ensue if you’re not careful, bro.

    *ponders the idea*

… wanted an application form, did you say?

  22. Zaty

    1. 1 dollar reward???
    2. neat upgrades, lol.
    3. what a sweet friend tribute this is. =)

  23. Kenny Mah

    Zaty
    1. Hahahah… since she is ‘priceless’, just any token sum would do ma… then what for offer so much?
    2. Yeah, well. I doubt the Diva would allow us to upgrade her, haha.

    3. Thanks! :)
