Breakfast in Bed

There is no breakfast in bed, of course.

By the time we have finished with our waking and our washing, sacred morning rituals observed carefully without haste or hurry, the day’s first light has already found its way into our humble sanctuary. We have to leave and head for work. A week similar to everyone else’s, we will join the throngs scrambling for the offices, eager to get our nine-to-five done and over with.

But first, we will feed ourselves.

Not in bed, of course; we’ve already covered that. No reason not to have our first meal with grace and in silence. One of us will boil the water for the coffee; the other fetches the bread and the spreads, be it a trustworthy bottle of natural peanut butter or the unseasonal kaya, homemade and fragrant. The smell of fresh coconut and warm eggs in the morning is intoxicating, even if it’s just a memory enveloped in a jar of our favourite jam.

If we have prepared some sweet dessert the night before, we can have that, ladled slowly into large bowls so their steam may wake us up a little further. Dried fruits — longans, dates, wolfberries — blossom into flesh again, a sweet ghost of their former selves. A miracle double-boiled in rock sugar.

We don’t speak much; we don’t have to when we’ve done this so many times before. Waking first and then breaking our fast. A small meal, enough to satisfy the early pangs of hunger, yet in its own way a minor feast.

To begin each day in the company of the one you love, isn’t that reason enough to celebrate?

“To begin each day in the company of the one you love, isn’t that reason enough to celebrate?”

    It surely is :)

  2. Chin

Yes this is the reason to live. The companionship and a minor feast. Unhurried. It happens during the weekends and I treasure it.

  3. Eudora

There’s nothing like starting off our day watching the eyes of the one we love without having to rush to work every morning & just enjoy each other company during breakfast. It is indeed enough reason to celebrate life. I just wish people will have more time for that kind of rituals these days.

    Sweet dessert for breakfast?
    Delicious! ;)

  4. Michelle

The beauty of life lies in its simplicity. So I believe. There is no need for extravagant romances, when we can have sweet nothings.

  5. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

carrot: Glad you feel the same, dear. *hugs*

Chin: Yes, let’s not forget never to take any of this for granted.

Eudora: I believe it’s a matter of putting things in perspective. Leaving the house an extra five, fifteen minutes early will not get you that much further in the morning rush, but taking the time to relax and prepare for the day will certainly envelop you in a calm that is near impenetrable.

(Well, till there’s an accident and EVERYONE slows down to watch, little busybodies that we are. Ga.)

    Michelle: So true. :)

  6. Love is the reason why we live :D

  7. Jennifer

It’s so lovely. Normally people will just rush for breakfast. No one really see the morning routine as you do. Really a different perspective. Very cool.

I’m the one who prepares breakfast every day. Simple one, though. Half-boiled eggs and bread. Tea and Horlick drinks. Nothing fancy. Even if I prepare a small feast, I wouldn’t be able to finish coz I normally don’t eat heavy breakfast. Hehe!

    Do tell us more.

  8. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

equilibrium2008: It sure seems that way, doesn’t it? Well, love and American Idol.

Jennifer: Ah, we have half-boiled eggs sometimes. Other times we decide to do away with making breakfasts ourselves and saunter to the nearest McDonald’s or San Francisco Coffee and just have others make it for us. Weekends will see us driving into PJ for dim sum or nasi lemak.

It’s not what’s on the menu that matters, but who shares the menu with you, right? :)

  9. Jennifer

Of course, Kenny. I always enjoy the time spent together no matter what we have. It’s a blessing to me. Breakfast at McD is my favorite although not his. Hehe! We both love San Francisco Coffee though but never had breakfast there before. I will probably suggest it one day. Thanks.

  10. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Jennifer: Well, even fast-food restaurants can become rituals. We both have our usual orders — two pancakes with sausage and tea; egg McMuffin with sausage and orange juice; hash browns on the side. Guess who takes which? ;)

  11. Jennifer

I would guess you take the two pancakes with sausage and tea while your wife takes the egg McMuffin with sausage and orange juice. That’s normally how we take if we go to McD for breakfast minus the orang juice as I love coffee. Haha! And of course I love hash browns which I normally save them for last. Haha!

  12. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Jennifer: Nah, I’m the one who goes for the egg McMuffin with sausage and orange juice every time. I love juice in the morning and for some reason I only like tea during teatime. I’m boring like that, haha.

But I save the hash browns for last too! Aren’t they the best?

(Is it me or are we giving McD’s some free publicity here? LOL.)

  13. cumi&ciki

Hi! Saw ur caption on the BSG website! great blog… and yes, that’s reason enough to celebrate :P so romantic .. lol
    Mei

  14. Nic (KHKL)

hehe, was going to do a supper in bed thingy as well. *akan datang*

wow, tong sui for breakfast…on a weekday! awesome. i only have birdfood-like grains and bread. it’s so mundane now that i equate breakfast with respiration. sad!

  15. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

cumi&ciki: Thanks for dropping by, Mei! :)

Nic (KHKL): Hahaha, then it matches my entry here… we could do a duet blog posting thingamajic, no?

And bro, don’t equate breakfast with respiration; instead, think of it as fuel for perspiration later… ahem. ;)

  16. keropokman

anti-climax question. who does the dishes after? :-P

  17. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: Hahaha, good one actually. The answer? We take turns, though mostly it’s me cos that means I avoid doing the cooking bit. I know it’s strange, I’d rather wash the dishes than cook… :P

  18. keropokman

    the house rules:
    - in my mum’s place, the person who cooks washes up as well.
    - in my place, the person who does not cooks, washes up. LOL

i beg thee, grant thy reader another question….

Sir say Sir’s kaya is home made, but Maria want to ask. How come Sir’s photo, the kaya has stickers on it? Sir bought kaya labelled, “home made” or Sir really make it at home? Back home in the pi-li-pines, when we say home made, we make it in our kitchens.

Sir made it or mum make it? Teach Maria recipe ok?

  19. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: In my house, it’s whoever feels like it, ahahah. Seriously, it works cos sometimes one partner is simply too tired, so the other just does everything. It doesn’t matter much so long as there’s give and take over the long run.

Hahah… to answer your question, the kaya is home-made by me Mom and she poured it into a recycled jam jar as Moms are wont to do. Simple answer, no? :)

  20. ∙ spiffy ∙

i prefer to wash the dishes than cook too. Hahah… but then again, at my house.. mum does the cooking, washes up the wok and stuffs…. then dad washes up, cleans everything and takes out the garbage after we’ve finished our meal. Hehe… :-p

  21. keropokman

Yes, it works. In reality rules tak pakai punya, people will always help each other. :-)

Ah, that explains the sticker. You should learn how to make it too. LifeForBeginners kaya will be a best seller. hehe…

  22. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

spiffy: Wahh… so lucky har you… Mom and Dad does everything… But I guess I’m that way to anytime I saunter home cos the folks are just happy to see me back. Love the parental units… They are the best, aren’t they? :)

keropokman: LifeForBeginners kaya? Aiyoh… who dare eat?

  23. Wah liao. It’s good that you found each other…so perfect hor. If not, you’d probably end up having breakfast while speeding to work, one hand holding the Jacob’s cream crackers, and the other on the steering wheel, occasionally switching hands to reach for the coffee tumbler on the side….and you curse yourself for for staying up late reading that damn book when you oughta be sleeping so that you can wake up early to have a nice leisurely tong sui with your loved one.

Dun leggo of dis wan ar. Sure cannot find another wan like dis wan.

  24. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Lyrical Lemongrass: No leggo. Hold on tight tight wan. No escape. LOL.

*remembers your comment on part one*

Man, your comments on this series alone is reason enough to keep writing it. LOL.

  25. lingzie

my breakfasts (if i even have any) are gulps of fresh milk/milo/cereal drink (downed really quickly before i dash off for work), or a tub of yoghurt, or a bun (usually eaten in the car)….the occasional bowl of oats if i have time to spare!
i’d rather get 5 more mins of sleep than have breakfast! lol
    bad habit i know… :P

And yes…”To begin each day in the company of the one you love, isn’t that reason enough to celebrate?” i can hardly wait. :P

  26. asstha

so sweet… it’s wonderful to have someone to wake up to in the morning :)

  27. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

lingzie: Oh but you must never skip breakfast, my dear. Most important meal of the day, yes? :)

asstha: It is, oh but it is… *sighs contentedly*

  28. ∙ spiffy ∙

lucky i am… but mom is starting to make noise ady. Hahah….

  29. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

spiffy: Ah then, their filial and beloved daughter must know what she must do, no? *sniggers*

  30. ∙ spiffy ∙

yup! close one ear and pretend she didn’t hear anything! LOL…

i’ll help la.. on weekends.. on weekdays, by the time i reached home, eat and shower.. i’m too tired to do anything else ady. read paper also malas. hahah…

  31. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

spiffy: LOL! Terrible lah you, wasn’t the answer I’d expected at all! Well, at least you do help out in the weekends… :P

  32. ∙ spiffy ∙

    Hahaha….. i’m a very lazy piggy. :-P

  33. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

spiffy: It’s okay, all parents love their lazy lil piggies, even mine. ;)

  34. Jun

“To begin each day in the company of the one you love, isn’t that reason enough to celebrate?”

of course, my friend, it is. but breakfast in bed would be the icing on the cake– or, in yourspeak, the added pandan to the kaya– ain’t it? ;)

  35. Hmm really now… :) I honestly don’t want that much American Idol.. ahahaha. I usually watch Date my mom and Parental Control :D

  36. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Jun: I love that… added pandan indeed. Cute. :)

equilibrium2008: Actually I don’t watch television at all… I only caught with The Battle of the Davids on YouTube thanks to my friend’s frenzied following. I’m a DC fan. :D

  37. ∙ seowyin ∙

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day :)
Unfortunately due to all the early morning meetings, I could only enjoy it during weekends.

“To begin each day in the company of the one you love, isn’t that reason enough to celebrate?” — Totally agree :)

  38. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

seowyin: Ah but breakfast on the weekends — that’s still breakfast, no? So long as you find some time to linger leisurely, it’s okay even if it’s only Saturday and Sunday. :)

  39. zaty

it certainly is a reason to celebrate, kenny.

ummm… kaya on fresh from the toaster toast… ;P

  40. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

zaty: Ah, twas but plain bread. We don’t own a toaster, us poor folks… :(

  41. sulee

breakfast in bed could be something else too u know kenny *Grin*

  42. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

sulee: Something else too? Hmm, I wonder what that might be? :P

  43. Camemberu

Aaaah so lucky you are to:
    a) have someone to wake up to in the mornings
    b) have someone who appreciates breakfast
    c) not be diabetic!

  44. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Camemberu: Yeah, I am very much fortunate. :)
