Birthmates

.

Birthdays are wonderful things. Celebrations, cakes, candles, those sort of stuff. Let’s not forget the camarderie, though. That’s the best part. What better way to signal the passing of another year than to sound it in with one’s best friends?

(Yup. It’s all about the noise.)

Better yet if you’re sharing the same birthday with someone else. Someone who loves fashion as much as you do, who can Louis Vuitton to your Giorgio Armani, who can match your Prada with a little Hermès on the side. Someone who understands an hour is barely enough to get started on getting ready for the day. Looking this good takes time.

(Yup. It’s all about the poise.)

.

Fong Lye, The Gardens

.

Birthmates. It’s the latest craze. From the moment they met and discovered their common birthdate, they were inseparable in their hedonistic hum and playful purr. Here is sung the Ballad of cK and Henny: The Siu-Yeh and the Datin. The Young Master and the Dainty Mistress. Such sweet, commanding voices. They call, we come. They beckon, we serve.

(Yup. It’s all about the voice.)

It’s not easy, of course. Being this, uhm, wonderful. It takes someone special to be this, uhm, special. A tough job, but someone’s got to do it. Or, in this, case, two someones. They are almost Siamese twins, attached at their waist by this season’s Gucci belt. A twirl of her wrist, a quick nod of his head, and their minions move and maneoveur to work their wishes into being.

(Yup. It’s all about them toys.)

.

The Datin

.

The birthday girl can’t help getting all the attention. There’s just something about the Datin. Grown men hang on her every word. She can make a simple dent in her rear bumper (we’re talking about her car here, naturally) seem a tail of epic proportions (tale, we meant tale). When the lady shifts her lips (or indeed, her hips), guys sit up and pay homage to her appeal. Heck, they simply can’t resist.

(Yup. It’s all about them boys.)

The birthday boy is the quiet type, not a chatterbox, not him. No need for so much noise when you’re chockful of charm. Happiness can be a slow thing, no need to rush. Not when everyone’s busy sending you their heartfelt regards and best wishes. It’s a great time to be alive. Every year that passes just brings so much more. He grins, and the whole world melts at his feet.

(Yup. It’s all about the joys.)

.

The Young Master

.

so do 3 of you have the same birthday… or is that 2 bdays and 3 dinners.. (in which case… “so greedy one ah”.. lol. Cool shots.. happy belated bday to the mercurial, feisty, communicative gemini. i should know.. i AM gemini ;P

  2. Precious Pea

Oooo…Happy birthday to the Birthday Boy and Birthday Girl! I still have not come across anyone who shared the same birthdate + year as me. Shall i advertise for it? HAHA!

Btw..what or where were you and CK staring at?

  3. what were u looking at dwn there @ datin?

    hmm hmm..

  4. Beside tha boys and girl, that piece of matcha cake looks so tempting! what a great nite out!

  5. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

cumi&ciki: Just two of them — the birthday boy and birthday girl. Two birthday dinners (and one after-meal dessert outing) so far cos I believe even more are planned! These days, birthday celebrations stretch out for weeks it seems! :P

Precious Pea: I’m sure your birthmate is somewhere out there, dear. Maybe he/she has two lovable doggies too, like Pea & Pumpkin? (Mint & Melon, they might be called, ven. Hehe.)

lotsofcravings: Were we staring down there at Datin? Were we? Hmm…

Big Boys Oven: The matcha + red bean cake fared better than the matcha brownie, I’m afraid. And me such a big fan of brownies! :(

  6. keropokman

talking about people having the same birthdays!

you know when you get a new colleague at work, u talk about little frivolous stuff. we progressed to how old are you. we had a like guess the year, ooo.. same year… then we had a guess the month… ooo… same month… and guess the day! ooo… not on the same day but less than 24 hours apart. oh man… and we shared the same office for 2 over years.

then earlier this year! thanks to facebook. friends linking friend’s friend. and oh wow, a person having the same birthday! then a few facebook later, guess what!!

our parents knew each other, why? because after giving birth to us, they were staying in the same ward!!!

    how interesting ya!

  7. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: That’s a FANTASTIC story! Thanks for sharing it with us. Isn’t amazing how we can be so close to someone and not know what we have in common? Ah, but when it’s time for the reveal (so to speak), that just makes all the more fun, no?

Facebook’s real helpful in keeping track of everyone’s birthday (but only if they put that info in — I discovered Henny’s birthday wasn’t announced on FB but I guess a lady has need to keep certain details confidential, ahem).

  8. really seems like a lot of of good old clean buddy buddy comradeship.
Well, its true life’s got to be shared ( like most things too ).
which is why we never try to laugh alone
    hahaha ( except at the keyboard… )

  9. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

backStreetGluttons: Oh no, we never laugh alone. Happy noise is best made in company of good friends and good food! (Though we try not to laugh with our mouths full. Dim sum missiles, anyone? Hehe.)

  10. Jun

talking abt bdays, i’m gng for my friend’s tmr!! can’t wait! :D

  11. Justin L

WOW! YOU GUYS REALLY ENJOYED YOURSELVES!!!! and i miss Henny too!!! - wondering who is that cutie behind CK in the 2nd picture :-p

  12. Kenny….what r u staring at yea???
    lol

  13. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Jun: Yeah, isn’t strange how many birthdays seem to congregate in the months of June and July. Makes one wonder what them old folks were doing nine months prior… :P

Justin L: Of course we did. Having fun is COMPULSORY. Hahaha… And what cutie? cK isn’t in the second pic, just me and Henny and that darn sweet potato ball clasped between a pair of chopsticks…

Christine Leng: Staring? Where got?

  14. Nic (KHKL)

my birthdays are usually celebrated alone.
    just like my other days.

    so sad hor?
    *envy you guys/gals* ;)

  15. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Nic (KHKL): Haiya, why celebrate alone one… let us know we will celebrate with you… so much fun and noise you might even regret it for the public embarrassment we’re bound to cause you, hahaha…

  16. Chin

Prose, Poetry and Pictures in slow beautiful motion. I am sure it is well thought out and cherish by loved ones. It is a gift to be able to pause and reflect in this crazy rat race world.

  17. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Chin: That’s a lovely way of putting it — pausing and reflecting. Especially when you realize what whirlwind madness we put the first restaurant through… even for a Taiwanese eatery, we have to have had set new standards for LOUD CONVERSATION. Hehehe.

  18. hmm I wish it’s my birthday now la… Hmm I love LV and also Hermes. But I am still thinking if I will get Prada since I love Coach over Prada hehe… ;)

So if it s my birthday, what gift should I ask from you now la. haha

  19. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

equilibrium2008: Wow, you ladies really know your stuff! For me, Coach just means the guy who trains us in basketball or whatever. And Hermes would be another name for Mercury, that Roman-Greek god of something… :P

  20. lingzie

oh i spot that lil tell tale puffer fish logo which can only mean one thing…hajime!! i do so love this place!

speaking of birthdays… i have come to know 3, THREE people who do not celebrate their birthdays. all of them guys. isnt that just odd? or it is just me, who attracts odd people? lol

  21. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

lingzie: Glad you spotted the puffer fish logo… I love the design! And Hajime is way cool. The food is very excellent. So glad Lyrical Lemongrass recommended this place.

Folks who don’t celebrate their birthdays aren’t that rare lah. Me, I try to avoid it every year, but my friends won’t hear of it. Just means putting on more pounds via the birthday cake… They insist you take most of it back, you know. Sighs… :P

  22. keropokman

Nic, tell us when… you can have celebrations in KL and also in SG. hehe..

  23. Nic (KHKL)

    WAHHH!!!! thanks kenny and keropokman!
    so nice of you guys!
    can’t wait for my XX’th birthday d…hehehe…

  24. gina

Eh.. caught you staring at Datin’s cleavage leh.. you notti notti boy! Haha!

  25. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: Wah, that’s right … double celebrations! :D

Nic (KHKL): XXth birthday? What number is ‘XX’ concealing, my friend? You can’t be more than, say, 17?

gina: Got meh? I dun see no cleavage… Hehe.

  26. Msiagirl

Ahh lovely post as usual: Happy bday to the Gemini Twins cK and Henny :) sorry I been so busy…no blog :(.

  27. Nic, you piece of shit…didn’t we celebrate your bday this year?? Conman. :-P

Kenny…..great tale, as always. The pictures tell a better tale if one cares to look deeper. *grin*

  28. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Ahh… two of my favourite ladies!

Msiagirl: Well they’re both actually Cancerians, or so they tell me. Could there be some mix-up at birth? Hehe.

Miss your blog posts, dear but we understand. Awaiting eagerly for your return! :)

Lyrical Lemongrass: Pakcik Nic a conman? Say it ain’t so! Lol.

And dear, what makes you think we didn’t look deeper? ;)

  29. Nic (KHKL)

harlow, lyrical lemongrass… “my birthday” as in “my birthday, birthday”. i was referring to the exact date lar…not the belated one. and yes, we did have a belated birthday celebration. and it was unforgettable. a “celebration of life”..*wink wink* ;)

kenny, i shouldn’t have revealed my ‘kisah benar’. yesterday, some youths of today said i was fishing for sympathy with that comment. LOL!

  30. tigerfish

Hahhaa…I was lookin at the same shot. What are you staring at ? LOL!

  31. keropokman

    Nic’s a conman? Hmm…

The bottom half of the first picture, the background looks like someone studying in the library ya?

There’s also the teapot soup right? Sedap / enak tak?

  32. Well, I know it is just the same as the guy’s lingo. You also use jargon words that we girls don’t understand either. :P

  33. jason

I think it’s cool to have friends sharing the same birthdate. Saves time for planning :p

  34. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Nic (KHKL): Unforgettable meh your belated birthday celebration? So unforgettable you forgot to invite me? Hahaha.

(Now I’m wondering what you meant by “celebration of life”… Got *wink wink* some more.)

And which youths of today would that be? I’d have thought it’d be some seniors of yesterdays who would have reprimanded you for fishing for sympathy votes, teehee.

tigerfish: What was I looking at? Actually, I misremember. Maybe the Datin dropped a sweet potato ball on her lap or something. You all know how I love my sweet potato balls… :P

  35. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: Nic a conman: Tell me, what do you know of this? Sounds like you know something we don’t, haha.

And I think that dude is studying the menu lah, studying my favourite subject — FOOD!

And no, it wasn’t teapot soup but two pots of tea; one rose and another one jasmine. And then later we had green tea some more. (We did have soup though, different soups for each person.)

equilibrium2008: What guys lingo? You mean Manchester United Chelsea Liverpool? :P

jason: Or better yet, no need to plan at all… just drop by the nearest makan place in the Klang Valley! We’re not a food haven for nuthin’ what… ;)

  36. keropokman

I don’t know anything.. Don’t ask me.. *zips mouth*
Oh yes, you coming to Spore July right? The tourism board belanja makan leh!

Your favourite subject is food? benar ke? Not datin? hehe…

You guys are really tea lovers too eh? I am drinking my oolong tea now, but my favourite is still bak kut tea. LOL…

  37. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

keropokman: Uhm, my trip to the Lion City this month may be pre-empted. Some poor scheduling. Sighs. Will come down eventually though… Can’t wait to see you guys! :)

My favourite subject? Okay, maybe it isn’t food. But Food is a close second. ;)

As for the love of tea, it really depends on me mood… sometimes it’s tea, sometimes coffee, and sometimes just a hot, piping mug of Milo kaw. Guaranteed satisfaction. Yeah…

  38. Tummythoz

Great shots of ck. Sexy shirt.

  39. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Tummythoz: Hahaha, he’d be well-chuffed to hear that. Don’t flatter him too much, ladies… he’ll get an inflated head (to match his ego, no less).

  40. Ok ler…Nic’s not a conman…he speaketh the truth. It was a belated celebration. (Sheesh…engineers and their obsession with precision!!) Of course I remember the Celebration of Life. *wink wink*

Kenny, which seniors of yesterday are you referring to ar? As far as I know, there are not many who are older than you here. Don’t be so mean about Msiagirl lar. She got feelings too, ok.

    Teehee!

  41. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Lyrical Lemongrass: Hey, would someone tell me what this Celebration of Life *wink wink* thingamagic is? :(

I wasn’t referring to Msiagirl. She young like me ma… Kennyboy and Msiagirl. Not like some Auntie Serai… :P

  42. Msiagirl

Eek! LL getting her own back now for me calling her auntie, oops la - that girl she cannot forget oni. I WAS only kidding ma. Maybe she come back happy from all that fiery Tom Yum some more in BKK. singha singha. Appease appease. ;)

  43. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Msiagirl: Ahh… Since she likes Thai cuisine so much + that My Elephant restaurant which serves Thai = she’s developed the memory of an elephant? Hehe. Singha singha… Appease appease…

  44. yeah, those kind of lingo. Dang, sometimes I would just stare at him and say nothing. He thought I was impressed, he didn’t know I am speechless because I am clueless of what he was saying to me hahaha…

  45. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

equilibrium2008: Ah… the whole “if you don’t know what to say, just say nothing” trick. Works well for me too, haha.

  46. Tunku Halim

The best thing is to have good friends to celebrate that birthday with. And it looks like you had lots of fun. The food looks so yummy too!

  47. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

Tunku: Good Friends + Good Food = :D

  48. ∙ nao ∙

Where is MY birthday cake??? (LOL)

GOOD FRIENDS and GOOD FOOD = FABULOUS! :)

    How are ya, anyways?

  49. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

nao: I’m good, I’m good… just missing in action as always. Will try to log on this evening and catch ya online, okay? *hugs*

P.S. Your birthday cake? Haven’t baked it yet, heehee…

  50. imeau

    Kenny dear,

Pls…on my behalf…give cK & Henny a belated birthday hug!

    Thanks.

  51. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

imeau: Will do, dear. So sweet of you! :)

  52. daphne

yum! Fong Lye’s atmosphere is great for a birthday gathering so intimate!

  53. ∙ Kenny Mah ∙

daphne: Couldn’t agree more! See you there the next time we head to Fong Lye? :)
