It’s Valentine’s Day. Oh bummer.
February 14 and we have to fork out a bundle for horrendously over-priced roses, greeting cards dotted with large pink hearts, gourmet chocs, teddy bears and other fluffy stuffed animals, the whole lot. And champagne for those who are ‘truly romantic’, or so the restaurants will tell us, all the while gleefully marking up their prices.
We learn to dread Valentine’s Day. There is nothing remotely romantic about this event, this homage to crass capitalism. We decided to boycott the darned day, naturally. What else could we do? Drink champagne all day?
… hmm. Now that’s an idea…
.

One last thing before I go…
I’m flying off to Hanoi in less than five hours and will only return to Kay-El on Sunday afternoon, so don’t worry if you don’t see your comments appearing here… I’ll approve, publish and reply to them all when I return.
Ah veel bee bak!
Hey Kenny,
I love the V-day post. Not too sugary but not to salty either.
That’s pretty much how I feel about the holiday, I think. I had a smaller dinner party but made shrimp and artichoke heart pasta. I thought it would be entertaining, even if I was the only one who got the joke.
I had just one comment on formatting. I love the new site, but with your multi-pages, do you think you could include a next button in addition to the multi-numbers? I know it’s a nit-picky thing, but I think it would be nice.
Another idea is what I’ve been doing every Valentine’s Day.
Go out…and laugh at couples willing to spend money on this day.
Just that now I have someone to share that with.
3. Do note that his beloved Thamby, HairyBerry and I got blamed for not bringing more hot chicks to his party.
Hope you have a good time in Hanoi!
Sounds like you went ahead to have a champagne brunch!
Awww. Chocolates and now champagne!
Romantic!
i think it couldnt have been summarised any better…
to step into an innocent brunch..getting intoxicated and throwing that lovey dovey idea of Valentines out of the crowded brain…
awesome..
Great food, fun and friends. A merry doeth good like a medicine.
What type of camera do you use?
I was just looking around your blog; and I swear, you have the most exquisite photos– something about the color.
*hugs*
p.s. I want to drink wine with you, lots of it!
Alo…you’re not supposed to reveal a woman’s age lar!
hahah, what A GORGEOUS post, and pics, if i may say so myself! Glad yall came and had a blast.
Paid the price severely the next day though.
PAGE SEVEN!!! I TOOK THAT SHOT ON THE RIGHT!!! Money cannot buy..
homage to crass capitalism… i couldnt have said it better…
ohh..guess ur not goin tmr for the Coca session..
wow.. now that’s the way to spend Valentine!
Aw we all know you’re a sucker for Valentine’s Day. Big Val’s Day smoochies to you!
Eh, btw, forgot to add, got award for you on my blog!
Valentine schmelentine! I think only couples under 21 are allowed to celebrate Valentines. One you start earning money and carving a career, everyday should be freaking Valentines! Bubbly every weekend! Jewellery every now and then just because. Innit?!
What a wonderful time for a wonderful bunch of people! Who needs roses and romance when you have 17 bottles of champagne and premium company? Hope you’re having a swell one in Hanoi!
One of the best people watching day of the year.
omg u gng to hanoi!!?? yaaay i can seek ur advise on whr to stay cos i’m doing a vietnam tour in june!!
ps: altho i’m not as chocomad as u, i do think that they go well with champagne
pps: theobama sux. can u pls come to ade and lemme show u the real thang? ;P bring the devil along too. no sour strawberries i promise.
a sip of champagne and valentines with good friends: PERFECT.
such decadence and such delicious drama! i like how u ffeed each bite of ur valentines story to us, one chapter at a time. =)
Woohoooo.… really enjoying to see all the pics in here! So fun!!!
Pg.3.. that’s unkaleong, right?
Can’t wait to see your post of Hanoi! Was there 3 years ago.… and really had a great time.
Page 4 takes the cake with the spread.
I sense “Hide and Seek Part 2″ in the making.
What’s it gonna call?
Hmmm…How about, “I came, I licked, I swallowed”.
The truffle salsa, I mean.
I love the “Serenity” chapter. Very quiet and beautiful in the middle of all the Valentines rush.
“If all be true that I do think, there are five reasons we should drink. Good friends, good times, or being dry, or lest we should be by and by, or any other reason why” –Anon–
even tho u spent it with all ur friends, it’s still very romantic .
=)
did u happen to have a video recording of the karaoke king singing? LOL
Gonna be a bit hard to do lar, i think he starts singing only after downing copious amounts of alcohol. Hahaha. I kid Nic I kid.…
Was good meeting up with all of you. So, lunch Citibank. Bila?
We dont celebrate V-day at all and no champagne. Worse, it is just work work work!
Aiya. Nasib baik saya datang balik check. Hari ini? Boleh, jika you senang. Hari tu bang cakap nak invite lagi seorang kan? Lang Botak senang tak? Jika boleh ajaklah sekali..
Valentine’s Day is perfect to try to talk about love and try to drink expensive wine.
Other days are for love
have a great trip !
Man, I can almost taste the champagne you guys are drinking! Next time can join in?
a unique valentine’s day… i want to try this with my frens next valentines too! =)
Yet another glamorous party! Seriously, are you a party planner?
[…] For the cool, hippie take on the party, click here : Life for beginners […]
Hey dear… Haven’t heard from you in ages and ages! Glad you had a nice dinner party too. As for saltiness, I’m sure I can add that in future posts, hehe.
Great idea about the Next button… I’ll add that as soon as I get some time to code. It would be very nice indeed!
LOL… That’s perfectly evil and… a great idea!
And laugh I did too… Muahahaha…
“saltiness” in future posts? we wait with bated breath. =D
Yes, and you were one of them hot chicks we got blamed for!
Oh I had the best time ever! Just got back today and now rushing to catch up on everything — work, life and blogs, blogs, blogs!
Ah well, when one is invited by such a prodigious and redoubtable host, one does nothing but accept with joyous gratitude and enjoy with much party animal aptitude. Yeah.
And I wonder — What’s next? Tee hee.
The crowded brain? Not mine, sir… mine is most wonderfully empty on most days. LOL
The best medicine indeed: The laughter of good friends mingled with that of your own.
Just a simple point-and-shoot, dear. A Sony Cybershot. My friends use much more savvy contraptions such as DSLRs of various levels of professionalism, but generally the colour comes from my harebrained Photoshopping.
*hugs hugs*
P.S. And the best wine ever, cos it’d be shared with you!
P.P.S. I’ve got all my Livejournal posts from 2004–5 up here… Too bad Wordpress couldn’t import the comments but now with this new nested comments thread function, I may just post the comments from those days as they were, if I ever find the time… We had some great conversations back then, didn’t we?
Not to the exact year, no. But a general round-up to the nearest decade or century… can what…
Ah our glorious host! We are not worthy! We are not worthy!
The severe price the day after is but a reminder we should do this way more often? Hehe.
You sure did, dear, you sure did. Full credits up by Tuesday latest, promise!
Crass capitalism? Mana ade? Just minum champagne and makan tons of good food with great friends, is all…
Nope…
Haha… Yeah it is, I certainly like to think so.
Am I? I think I’m just a big sucker in general.
Oooh, so sweet of you! Thanks, dear!
I’d agree but since I’m such a Scrooge I’m gonna ignore your last couple of sentences, hehe. But yeah, every day should be a Valentine’s and so far, even the dry, lousy days are Valentine-ish when one is with the one one loves…
I love that — “premium company” — which was exactly what I had.
Had an amazing time in Hanoi, thanks… though goodness knows when I’ll have time to blog about it. But I sure will, trust me on that!
LOL… Trust you to think of that, dear. Hehe.
Ask away, dear… though I should also recommend some exotic eats and meats if you are into those…
P.S. They do, don’t they? Chocolates and champagne… match made in heaven.
P.P.S. Ah, with an invitation like that, you can be sure I’ll be in Adelaide one day with the Devil Prada in tow…
I’m in PERFECT agreement. Hee.
Delicious drama? Yums, indeed. And there’s still one last bite… coming soon!
she’s closer to 40 than 50.
That’s not what she said that day… ROFL!
Pg. 3? Can’t confirm/deny — you’d have to ask the man himself! Hehe…
Hanoi will be up before the end of March, surely but I do have a very busy schedule next month with lots of travel…
Of course you did. Mean the truffle salsa. My my, is that what we’re caling it these days, though? The truffle salsa? LOL
P.S. “Hide and Seek Part 2″ may turn up sooner than you might think…
“every day should be a Valentine’s and so far, even the dry, lousy days are Valentine-ish when one is with the one one loves…”
Diehard romantic lah u.
The DieHardest. LOL
Glad you like it… I found two wonderful mood shots to collage and contrast with each other… And one I took myself some more. Hehe.
That’s beautiful, dear, and entirely befitting the tone of this post. Thanks for sharing!
*hugs*
You know, in a way, that is very, very true.
woahhhhhhhhhhhhh — TMI!!!!
Whatever could you mean?
*muka innersen*
No, we didn’t! That’s the worst thing! We so need to film him one of these days!
Hahah… I do forget about that bit. Inebriation does bring out the Heavenly King/Queen (of Pop) in all of us.
Lunch Citibank? Besok? Sebelum I depart for Sarawak for an entire week? I so need to stop travelling.
Oh no! Poor thing lah you… Well, maybe the next post will cheer you up some. I’ve finished ‘kennymah’-ing the pics already… There’s just the text left to write and then I can post it up.
Haha, nasib baik tu. Hari ni okay kot. Nanti I facebook you for details, ye?
Lang Botak tu, I tak de nombor talipon dia lagi dia nggak berfacebook. Tanya bini dia tu?
Bini dia bukan secretary lah. Awak naik tingkat 42 jumpa dia la.
Tingkat 42? Nombor tu Jawapan Universal! The ANSWER to EVERYTHING!
… but again har, what’s the question?
Some of the best, ever, actually– if you ask me.
We were fuel for each other at a time we both needed it– it seemed for a while there, our lives sort of, lined up– same struggles; same fears– same, self-doubt (if I recall) yet, same heart. Confused, but inspired?
Are we different now?
Makes me wish I knew more about your time and energy investments as of late– and you knew more of mine.
You are a beautiful person.
p.s. does Wern have a blog still?
Are we different now? I suppose, but not all that different. There is some aspect of us that will never change, that is golden and eternal. I believe that’s the good stuff.
I wish I’ve been better at updating you on my life too and vice versa, but let’s not let that become regrets. We are who we are and we have this, and it goes on.
You are amazing, for all you have endured and triumphed over, and I wish I spent more time reminding you of this, dear.
*hugs*
Not sure about that, but I doubt it. The Livejournal days were a long time ago…
Of course–
I want to take a photoshop class from you, asap
there’s a gentle, freshness to a lot of the photos ’round here. and I like it.
where is he now, do you talk with him much?
Oh, you’d be surprised how little I know about Photoshopping… But thank you, I really appreciate your feedback on my design work.
No idea, it’s been awhile too.
Ah, you make V-Day sound like the least important day of the year for love, and the rest the real time when we make time for love and while we’re at it, make love also?
oh so it is vietnam ur gonna write about! yay! looking forward to it!
Yes they are very suitable for each other. How do you pick and choose from all your pictures?
Answer: Very slowly.
… which is the truth, actually. It’d be a heckuvalot easier if I were a trained designer and more ruthless in my approach but I’m a poor, sentimental amateur that lingers over every image… Sighs.
Hehe, don’t ask me, dude. Ask the host.
Disclaimer: May take awhile. Busy lar. :p
Oh, please do! I assure you that you guys will have a GREAT time!
Not a party planner… well, unless you count that party and that other one, and that… Oh, I guess I am? LOL
Haha, great Hitchhiker’s Guide bit of trivia wink wink here.
Glad someone caught it!
