.

She watches herself
She is not her reflection, she knows

She asks the mirror
Who shall satisfy me? Would there ever be?

Glass is glass: cold, dead
There can be no answer you don’t already hold

She smiles, bitterly
And erases her glass smile with a mallet

“O mirror, I know
You don’t lie; sometimes I wish you would.”

  1. Sean says:

    She seizes a shard
And draws a crimson line across her wrist
    She is not her reflection
She becomes glass, glass becomes her: cold, dead

  2. Yoli says:

The mirror, the harshest truth of all.

  3. jemima says:

Is she afraid that her aging lines are showing?

Is she afraid that the mirror reflects her true self whom other people do not see?

    Mirrors do not lie.
Neither do dreamers who talk in their sleep. ;)

    Maggie – she’s a authentic Chinese beauty & a fabulous actress.
    I’m a fan. :)

    • Kenny Mah says:

Who knows what she fears? Your guess is as good as mine.

And I have a story about dream-talking but I’ll leave that or another day… :)

  4. Legolas says:

Love Maggie, love the red, love the picture.

    • Kenny Mah says:

It’s from one of my fave scenes in the film Ashes of Time, a near monologue by Maggie Cheung’s character, which made me think of a woman talking to herself, or her own reflection.

The red is not so much startling as it is beguiling, yes?

  5. Yes, yes, mirror dont lie.
Especially if u got layers of fat around yr middle.
    (looking at oneself and groans)

    All that eating and sleeping..sigh..

  6. Ken, this is amazing, and the photo captures what you’ve wrote so well… I couldn’t think of another word than amazing.. “sorry” It is 9 am here and I am starving!

    • Kenny Mah says:

It’s 11:58pm and I just returned from dinner and I’m starving too! Guess that explains my current state. *sees comment above yours*

Okay, I’m sure I still have a couple of slices of mooncake left…

  7. Paul says:

    Love the images!

And hey, we both wrote about mirrors at the same time.

  8. No one depicts ponderous reflections better than Maggie Cheung. Maybe Claude Jade. But Maggie’s my top pick!! I think Ashes of TIme is the only WKW film I have yet to see. Right, to Bitorrent I go!!

  9. ladyironchef says:

Mirror mirror on the wall, where is the right one in this world? Mirror mirror on the wall, you don’t have to tell me, she’s still somewhere out there waiting for me

  10. Poh Chu says:

Maggie Cheung looks Japanese in this pic, is she? Beautiful poem too.

  11. Selba says:

Wow! What a gorgeous pictures of Maggie Cheung…. I haven’t watched her movies for quite long time (I guess the last time was more than 15 years ago… or more…).

    • Kenny Mah says:

Oh she has done some amazing films since then. Her acting truly improves with age. Right now, aside from a deleted cameo in Quentin Tarantino’s latest flick, she has sorta retired from acting though. :(

  12. Reminds me of a Chinese proverb: pee and look at yourself through the reflection!

    LOL

  13. cumidanciki says:

the mirror cracked from side to side.. ! hva great week!

  14. the_lighthouse says:

    mirror mirror on the wall
who’s the fairest of them all?

    mirror cracks.

    LOL

  15. ck lam says:

Pairing a gorgeous lady with beautiful words….that’s the capability of Kenny :)

  16. as da one who pauses overlong , & wishes with much regret into the mirror with just a tiny glimse of her haggard soul . there can be no reprieve except from today go out and just do it , for time is short
