Coffee, Tea or Me… Not Drinking?

It was the third cup that did it.

There we were, sitting at our respective barbershop chairs in the hair salon. Our stylist Merrine was done with my hair and asked if I wanted some coffee – they had an espresso machine installed last month. “Sure, “I said, “a caffè latte would be nice.” And as she walked off to go make one, her back disappeared to reveal a not-too-happy look on your face.

“Another coffee?”

“Uhm, yes? Why?”

“That’s the third cup you’re having today.”

“Oh.”

And you are right, of course. We already had a couple of coffees each earlier at Typica Café — I followed by favourite ice drip gula Melaka with a nice Harrar Mocha from Ethiopia. Given how easily caffeine affects me — cue instant insomnia — it’s no surprise you are less than pleased.

So the following morning, I decided to take your admonishment to heart and start the day fresh… sans coffee. Nope, not one drop of it. No cappuccinos or long whites or nothing. Just cups of hot honey lemon juice and barley lime and freshly squeezed OJ and mineral water — but not coffee.

I was barely half-awake for most of the day, naturally. Came home early and went straight to bed after a hot shower. And when I woke up this morning, after hours and hours of sleep, it suddenly hit me how refreshed I was. Maybe this less-coffee business worked after all.

Then I realised I had totally forgotten to write a blog post for today (till now, that is). Oops.

Oh well. You win some, you lose some. So there lies my dilemma: Coffee — to drink or not to drink?

  • Definitely can , but not too much lor…OK?

  • 3 cups of coffee a day does feel a tad too much (just a tad, nothing too excessive), so for the sake of your throat and future caffeine intake, let’s keep it down to a max of 2. Whaddya say?

    • I say that sounds like a deal! (Now if only Devil will affirm this deal…) *chuckles*

    • I’m sure you have your ways to “coerce” Devil into affirming. Ahem.

    • I’d be lucky not to get admonished again! Hehe.

    • Well, my days work just fine with only one cup of coffee. So maybe if you start slow (read: one cup) after your day-sans-coffee, you’ll find that you enjoy it so much more. =)

    • I am very much of the same mind — as with Slow Food, we can also go with Less Food, and take the time to savour it.

    • I hope all this talking about to drink or not to drink does not jeopardise my coffee date with you. =p

    • Of course, it does not — if I have to, I’ll save up my “coffee perks” to ensure I have at least one cuppa with you. *hugs*

Back to the my master study, and late night thesis, i’ll go for 3 shots of espresso in my coffee to start off the night.
(and two pints of beer to end it) :P

I’m a TOTAL fan for coffee (and beer) my say is to DRINK!

    • Espresso shots and beer chasers, eh? Not the kind of concoction I think I can survive, given my nervous constitution.

But hurrah for your vote to DRINK! *high-fives*

  • I’m like you, insomnia after coffee.. BUT I’m worse.. sometimes I get the cold shivers or cold sweat after the coffee effect ends. So.. no coffee for me thank you :P

    • Oh, I can get those cold shivers too if I have more than three cups a day, especially if it’s within a brief period. Oh dear, more votes for Nay.

    Ah, that is why! :p

Oh wow what a salon serving coffees! I think I’d enjoy your lifestyle

    • It’s not common here, I’ll tell you that much. They just started it recently and while we aren’t visiting them for the coffee, it’s a nice, thoughtful touch.

I understand. You two must be regulars too that they offered you a cup of coffee. Hehe. Or, even if you weren’t regulars, many know you’re famous so they would still offer a cup of coffee! :p :p

    • We are regulars but I think they’d serve it to any of their customers, even walk-in’s. They are just nice people. (Which may be partly why we visit their hair salon in the first place, their snip-snip skills aside.)

Oh! I hope they will serve sushi and I would walk in as many times as possible in a week :p :p
      especially if I were hungry

Oh, and thanks for the hugs. I think you were the first famous person on the internet, at least, who have hugged me :p :p even if it was only a virtual hug hehehe

I just got back from having my blood tested

      :)

That should be “has”, shouldn’t it? :p

    • Uhm, I’m not sure I would want the folks who are handling my hair to handle raw fish too! *chuckles*

      And: *more hugs*

      Be well always, my friend.

i’d say wean yourself off coffee, but then you could retort and tell me to wean myself off wine. it’d be a lose-lose situation, a stalemate, a mexican standoff! :D

p.s. my sister loves Possession: A Romance. but i could barely comprehend it while reading it. thank goodness for the movie adaptation (even though it wasn’t an engrossing movie, it required much less effort) :D

    • Oh, I would never ask you to quit alcohol cos I know it would never happen. Hehe.

P.S. I haven’t watched the movie yet — I think with this book, I can understand why my friend Marco refuses to watch Peter Jackson’s film adaptation of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (I enjoyed both the movies and J.R.R. Tolkien’s books) for I think I want to keep A.S. Byatt’s words as they are in my head.

Wean yourself off. Take only one cup a day. Stick to it.

2, at most. One to kick start the day, and if you need to, another to overcome the post-lunch sleepiness. Better yet, limit yourself to only 1 after lunch because what’s the use of sleep if you need a cuppa the moment you wake up from hours of rest? Make sense?

    • Makes a lot of sense, haha. I love how my lil’ mui-mui is advising me. Gotta listen and be a good kor-kor! *hugs*

  • How apt is this! I’ve just been deliberating the impossible – quit my 3-cup-a-day habit and embrace a life of utter independence from caffeine jolts in the AM. The question is… HOW?

    • All great journeys begin… with one small step. Let’s both make the distance, my friend!

  • Drink water. :) Water is good. :D

    • Water is very good. Must be why it’s falling all over the city now, causing massive traffic jams. *snickers*

  • But… how to stop… it tastes so goood…

  • I limit myself to 1 cup a day, 5 days a week only ;-)

  • i love coffee. but its a love hate relationship. love the taste. love the kick. but hate the way it keeps me awake for hours. a record was 36 hours of being awake despite a 7km run, kickboxing, work and sudoku (think it was almost 2 hours of playing).

    • 36 hours awake from coffee? Omigosh, how many cups did you drink?

Hmm. All these different views are making me consider that the middle path may be the only way to go. Moderation wins the day!

lol so u had a day without coffee eh? i’m trying to drink tea now instead of coffee on my days off- that is, if i manage to get a good night’s sleep prior. 2 cups of tea already for me today- hopefully no more to go!

    • Tea vs. coffee — for me, I’m guessing the second beverage always wins! *winks*

sometimes i wished that i could enjoy drinking coffee as you guys but i cant..somehow i feel bloated after drinking coffee, or maybe it’s my GI problem..not sure..i only take once in a while. hmm..dont take so much coffee, drink juices.

    • I guess coffee’s not for everyone, so don’t fret abut it, dear. A nice glass of freshly squeezed fruit juice sounds divine, especially in the hot weather.
