Don’t Turn Around

Don’t turn around.

It was by chance that I turned to my left; I ought to have been replying an email. And there you are, seated at the next table, a business lunch with a colleague. I cannot see your face, it is turned away from me. But I can see the breadth of your shoulders that stretches your shirt that my breath it does the same. I can see the silver ring upon your left ear and the diamond stud upon your right. I can see the lightly coloured curls upon your head, the close crop cut. You have lovely ears, like petals of a sullen rose inverted. Your skin in the late afternoon damask like the last tan of the summer. Your long, long neck. Your elegant strength as you lean over to take your drink. I have no idea if your drink is alcoholic but you sure are intoxicating. I can only guess and your mystery is your perfection.

Don’t turn around.

  • Life is unpredictable and this is where mystery resides…a mystery which promises a life of beauty, extraordinary possibilities, and magnificent richness.

It is like standing at the top of the mountain looking into the valley below. As the sun rises and the fog clears, we begin to glimpse the magnificence that exists below.

Initially, we didn’t know it was there because our view was obscured.

    Have a nice day! ;)

  • @jemima: A life of beauty, extraordinary possibilities, and magnificent richness. That is breathtaking, that notion, and that faith that this is not merely possible, it is all around us if we only silence our own inner noise and observe.

You have a beautiful, extraordinary and magnificent day, my dear!

    Wait, was that me? :p
    Sleep good!

  • @Rad: Alas, that was not you. *chuckles*

Sleep wasn’t that great last night due to two cups of coffee late in the day. I have certainly learned my lesson – no caffeine after noontime for me!

  • “You have lovely ears, like petals of a sullen rose inverted. Your skin in the late afternoon damask like the last tan of the summer.”

    This sounds so nabokovvvvv! <3

  • @Michelle Chin: You know what? I haven’t read Vladimir Nabokov before; now would be a good time to rectify that. As for suggestions; what should I begin with? ‘Lolita’ seems an obvious choice but I’m open to anything.

Lean over and bite his ears dammit!

  • @Paul: What, and do a Mike Tyson? *chuckles*

  • Rad wrote:

Oh,sorry to hear that. Well, sleep good at work hehe

  • @Rad: Wide awake now actually. I had some local brew called ‘cham’, which is 50% coffee… Heh.

  • You changed your header! So bright and summery! To reflect the change of weather perhaps?

Btw I do read your posts la in case you’re wondering why I’m making irrelevant comments. :P

  • @Baby Sumo: You noticed! Nice.

The change in header colour was for many reasons – having it brighter and more summery and golden is definitely one of them. Yay.

What irrelevant comments do you mean, by the way?

aiyo, ‘your long, long neck’ made me suddenly visualize a giraffe. might be partly because i just finished watching ‘zookeeper,’ the kevin james movie with talking animals that include a lion and lioness voiced by sly stallone and cher respectively, an elephant that wants to diet but keeps failing, and of course, a giraffe with a long, long neck :D

  • @Sean: Methinks I’d rather watch Cameron Crowe’s ‘We Bought A Zoo’ with Matt Damon and no talking animals. Ahem.

  • Where are my sunnies? *gropes around* Bright Masthead!

Happy New Year to both you and CK ;)

  • @unkaleong: Haha, this blog comes with no shades included. No budget for that. *chuckles*

A brilliant and super-bright New Year to you and your other half, bro!

ahh damn u kenny now i have that ace of base song in my head!!!! *mock annoyance at kenny*

  • @Jun: Ah… Ace of Base… They were such a guilty pleasure, weren’t they? Hehe.

  • Like my comments weren’t related to the post u were writing LOL

  • @Baby Sumo: Oh that’s fine; I’m used to it. *guffaws*

  • This is unrelated to the post.

I just came across the following quote & I immediately relate it to you & your writing.

“If the writing is honest it cannot be separated from the man who wrote it.” — Tennessee Williams

It is so undeniably you. :)

  • @jemima: Thanks for sharing this Tennessee Williams quote, dear. That’s exactly how I would want to write, and I’ll keep at it till I do.

Oh, never heard of that drink’s name before. Heh

  • @Rad: It’s a local kopitiam favourite, mixing half local tea with half local coffee. I love it!

  • lena wrote:

aiyah, why make yourself so difficult ? just go and sit in front of the person. No need to guess!

  • @lena: Hahaha… The point was to NOT look at the person. Sometimes the mystery is far more delectable than the reality, don’t you think?

  • lena wrote:

hahaha! now you remind me of that pimple ad on the tv recently..did you watch that?maybe you r right..better dont see.. mystery could be turned into horror and fright once it’s revealed!

  • @lena: Hahahaha… I don’t mean that! But yes, the reality can never be as seductive and beautiful as the mystery… or can it? Hmm.

  • lena wrote:

ya lah..i know..just for a laugh..it’s new year ..so must laugh more!

  • @lena: I completely agree. In fact, that was one of my thoughts today while I was walking in my neighbourhood, “This year I really ought to laugh more.”

Laughter makes the world a better place and us better people to live in it, ja?

  • Reading this, I imagined a psycho-thriller. I’d even thought of the cast for your story. Natalie Portman as the mysterious perfection and Natalie Portman again as the storyteller…Can’t explain why it’s Natalie Portman but somehow, you’ll need someone exquisite for a classy story like this.

Then, I thought of Ace of Base’s Don’t Turn Around. And just like that, the song killed everything…hahaha!

  • @HairyBerry: Two Natalie Portmans in one movie? You just sold your first movie ticket, bro! *winks*
