I have to remind you who Jeremy Renner is. The guy who appeared for two heartbeats in the film ‘Thor’ last summer. The archer. The Oscar nominee, the one with the war trauma. (Bomb disposal does that to a person.) The guy who is going to take over the next Bourne film (but who is not Jason Bourne). You are mostly still lost, but gamely ask, “So what’s the big deal about this Jeremy Renner guy?”
How do I answer? Where do I start?
Nothing, really… except for that casual intensity Mr. Renner exudes as he dances with Tom Cruise (metaphorically, of course), guns and blows exchanging, that breath of fresh air. He reminds me why I still go to the cinema, to an actual theatre. Jeremy Renner is an experience, he is.
Instead I tell you, “He’s funnier than Tom Cruise. Charming.”
You reply, “Oh. Okay.”
And we return to whatever we were doing – probably writing blog posts like this one – before Jeremy Renner entered our lives.

I simply don’t foresee The Bourne Legacy without Matt Damon. Then again, I’ve been wrong many a time with my predictions.
Haven’t been to the cinema for eons. As for this 4th MI, I don’t have a choice but to wait for the DVD.
@jemima: You never know. Mr. Damon might just make a surprise cameo. I’m quite open to seeing what Mr. Renner might do with the new role of another agent though.
One to watch definitely! I’ve only really seen him in just The Town but I may make MI4 my first encounter with the franchise!
@minchow: Try catching MI4 in the IMAX theatre – I think it made a huge difference in the viewing experience for me.
jeremy who????
@Jun: Renner. Jeremy Renner. *chuckles*
Oh okay
Hehehe
@Rad: And a happy Sunday to you, my friend.
Jeremy Renner is here in Manila. He’s shooting the last Bourne.
@Mark: Yup, I’ve heard. Such cool news. Means they are closer to completing the next Bourne chapter.
(And that’s the next/latest, not the last, one hopes. There is always a chance Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will be back in the future, in another instalment, and I’d love to see Mr. Damon and Mr. Renner in the same film.)
no leh, tom cruise is still the movie star of the highest intensity, shooting brightly across the big screen. next to him, jeremy renner is a lesser light in the firmament of film :D
@Sean: Oh hush, you Katie Holmes you. *snickers*
But Tom Cruise still more lengjai. :P
Btw have you seen Sherlock Holmes?
@Baby Sumo: On the former, debatable. On the latter, yes indeed I have and I’ve enjoyed Rachel McAdams immensely in both films. Only wish there were more of her.
The bromance between Holmes and Watson is, of course, utterly heartwarming. Heh.
As long as Renner aka new Bourne appears half naked in my boat with amnesia willing to be my houseboy, I’m fine with the story.
@Paul: That sounds less like the Bourne Legacy and more like the Bourne Fantasy… *guffaws*
To you two too too too too two too doo doo doo doo too
:p
@Rad: Sounds like someone is into doo-wop of late…
speaking of renner, I actually liked jeremy renner’s character in mi4. he’s funny.
@Michelle Chin: Exactly.
I should watch MI4, hor?
@gfad: Oh yes, definitely yes. I’ll give you three reasons to watch it, even – Paula Patton. Simon Pegg. Jeremy Renner. Jeremy Renner. (Make that four reasons. Ahem.)
And make it IMAX if available. For the vertigo if nothing else. Heh.
But I never liked this MI series ever since they made Jim Phelps the bad guy!! :P
@gfad: Try not seeing this as Mission Impossible 4 and more like The Jeremy Renner Show, Part One. (Certainly worked for me, hehe.)
Hmm yes?
@Rad: You mean, really? You’re into doo-wop?
Jeremy Renner made an impact in The Hurt Locker. Maybe that’s because he had the muka-kesian protagonist role there lah. Still, if you ask me what I remember the most about that movie, I’ll say the unconventional directing (for an action movie) from the first oscar-winning female director and the intense moments of defusing bombs featuring this soldier.
On another note, I thought the new Mission Impossible was too much Tom Cruise. Maybe cos Tom Cruise is a co-producer. There were soooo many “branding” moments that made me LOL. I did enjoy the gripping Burj climb though.
Oh, and I thought Paula Patton should have been kicked down the Burj instead of the pretty assasin, Moreau. Hehehehe.
Looking forward to another Bourne installment! I’ve always enjoyed this relatively less overhyped, more realistic espionage franchaise.
@HairyBerry: Jeremy Renner does have that face thing down pat. Not needing to depend on good-boy looks that age with time, he can work it with his acting facial muscles, yes?
As for too much Tom Cruise… Hmm. It is a Tom Cruise movie after all. We are lucky to get as much Patton and Renner as we did.
And yeah, totally a branding exercise. (Don’t agree with you on Patton vs. Moreau though. Paula rocks!)
I’m betting the next Bourne will kick ass… but in a different way. (Not too different though considering the new director was the writer for the first three instalments in the series.)
