The best meal I’ve had all year – home-cooked chicken wine mee sua with black fungus and wolfberries – made with love for my birthday. Everyone should have a Devil for a take-home chef, yes? (Not mine though; this one’s taken!)

Happy Birthday
@Prodigal Lulu: Thanks, my friend!
Happy Birthday KENNY. Many happy returns for the day. Wishing you another smashing year ahead.
It sure looks delicious! slurrp….
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY Kenny! Tried wishing you at FB but wasn’t allowed to. Well, probably I’m not your friend. *sob*
@Carpe diem: Thanks, mate!
@ilene ong: Probably cos my FB wall is not enabled… most folks left comments on my links or sent me direct messages. But will check later. Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Happy Birthday Kenny! What a sweet and lovely gesture – nothing beats a home cooked meal with love! :)
@iamthewitch: I couldn’t agree more – a home-cooked meal can make me happy as can be – now to find a way to have more of it! Hehe.
*HUGS*
Happy birthday, gorgeous! :)
(You are the lucky devil I reckon, for having such a lovely and loving Devil to call your own….)
@J the chocoholic: Heyyy… I thought that made me the ANGEL, no? Hehe. Thanks for the birthday wishes, dear. *HUGS*
Very yummy-looking! (hmm… isn’t this a typical “confinement” dish? :P LOL!)
@Pureglutton: Is it? Darn Devil told me that mee sua is a traditional birthday dish wor… Long, long noodles means longevity, ja?
Happy happy birthday you lucky devil(?)!
@Michelle: Thank you, my dear… For once I don’t mind being called a devil too, haha.
Won’t keep the Devil but can borrow ka :P Happy bday!
yums! however did the devil learn how to cook such a mouthwatering recipe? the closest approximation that i’d be able to whip up would be, errm, maggi mee (chicken soup flavor) with button mushrooms from a can and dried raisins from a packet :D
but maybe this could be an extra source of income for you both! rent-a-devil-chef to service hungry customers in taman desa. distribute leaflets and offer to deliver home-cooked soup to people for at, say, RM30 a pot :P
p.s. speak(ing) of the devil, have just left a comment on his blog for the first time. i hope the words conveyed my actual meaning, heheh :D
@Paul: Borrow? Hmm, there’s a hefty leasing fee, my friend… *chuckles*
@Sean: Uhm, I guess your “closest approximation” could be mouthwatering too? Do allow OTHERS the privilege of tasting it first, of course. Ahem.
RM30 a pot? For Devil’s delicious dishes? You gotta be kidding. Try adding a few zeroes behind that number and maybe we’ll talk business, sir.
P.S. Oh dear. Me go see now.
why leh? issit because there’s no animal flesh in my “closest approximation” recipe, versus the chicken slices in devil’s? fine, i’ll throw in some ayam brand canned tuna into mine as well! :D
hmmmm, such an expensive menu wan. now who would ever offer a seed grant to fund such a risky enterprise? :P
p.s. 它的工作!我是语言天才!
@Sean: Uhm, it’s less the ingredients and more the culinary skills of the chef in this instance…
As for investing in our enterprise, why none other than Sean of Eat Drink KL fame – your monthly food bills (100% dining out, at that) could easily fund us for the next quarter!
P.S. 你是个天才!(你 = Google Translate.)
Happy Birthday :) wah! nothing beats a take home chef!!!
@Leo (thule): Especially when this take home chef remains and stays at home too! *winks*
damnit, sean stole my line. i was gonna ask how much to rent Devil for an evening. bugger.
@Lyrical Lemongrass: The Devil? Priceless, of course. Bill Gates may not be able to afford him. Warren Buffett, even.
But for you, my Highness, you need only to ask… *winks*
What a coincidence!!!
I also cooked chicken mee-sua yesterday.
However, I’m sure mine wouldn’t taste as delicious as the Devil’s considering that it’s your special day yesterday. ;)
@jemima: I’m sure it did – but mine had some extra-special ingredients that weren’t in the dish itself – it’s the mood and the atmosphere and the day! *sighs happily*
You forgot the most important ingredient of all – LOVE. ;)
@jemima: Oh ya, got that also hor? *chuckles*
Yay! *plonks 20 ringgit* sold!
*pbbbbthhhh* at sean yoong.
@Lyrical Lemongrass: SOLD! To the highest, er, lowest… er, the ONLY bidder! Tee-hee-hee.
Selamat Hari Jadi, Encik Mah!
You mean Devil made the wine himself?? Rad!! Make some for me to bring back to AD please? :D
Since he knows how to make this dish, he must know how to make Wine Chicken with ginger and fungus. Please add this to the nasi lemak partay you are going to throw, thank you.
@gfad: No lah, Devil made the dish, but not the ingredients from scratch. Can you import alcohol into Abu Dhabi anyway? Not haram meh?
And this is basically Yellow Wine Chicken with Ginger and Fungus, just replace the yellow wine with this Fa Diu Zao (dunno the English translation for this Chinese wine) and add tons of wolfberries. And LUB. Never forget the lub. Lots of lub. Hehe.
eh, what’s this?! i turn my back for less than two hours and suddenly got surprise auction wan?!? but where got online auction finish so fast wan (even on ebay, it’s at least 24 hours). i double the bid and pledge 40 ringgit! :D
@Sean: Too late. Bidding’s closed lah.
If you want me to restart the auction, you gotta try “persuading” me… with a number much bigger than the one you pledged, I would imagine. Hehe.
Happy Birthday Kenny :)
BUT I’m quite sick of this mee sua coz I ate a lot when my confinement :(
@mimid3vils: No worries – I’m sure you’ll get something that’s nothing remotely like mee sua for your birthday meal!
Sold already lah. Got offer, got acceptance, got consideration. pbbbthhhh. Sean can bid for you instead.
@Lyrical Lemongrass: Guess that means Sean’s out of luck, then… on both counts. Hehe.
*facepalm*
Why are you giving me the recipe for? I don’t want the recipe. I want the prepared dish!! Ready to eat!!! :D
Well, I’ve managed to bring in some Gluhwein, Shiao Xing wine, I doubt I’ll have any problems wth rice wine.. ^_^
@gfad: Haha, this will take some fairygodfather magic again, I see, to keep the dish hot while it travel over distant lands and seas to the Far, Far Away Land of Abu Dhabi…
And ooh, Gluhwein! Nice!
*like!* pls let Devil know my bday is on the 15th of the 8th month ok ;)
@Jun: Wait… will that be the Gregorian calendar or the Chinese calendar… *sniggers*
I meant for the chicken wine to be served during the nasi lemak partay ler. And AWoLemon will agree with me cos she luuuurves Chicken Wine too!!
Hahahahah.. she’s so sweet, she’s anything but tart and lemony.. ^_^
@gfad: Haha, that might be arrange-able… especially if Queen Lemon herself issues a Royal Decree…
Tart and lemony? Our Queen? Hardly. The “lemon” in her Royal title refers to the pair of beautiful, voluptuous, sweet… er, lemons she has. Uhm, yes.
Lemons?? You call them lemons?? They’re sweet melons lar!! :D
@gfad: The entirety may an enormous and sweet melon be, but the tips are tart as tarty lemons, silly… Hehe.
And you would know the tips are tart because… ??
@gfad: Oh hush! Please do not ask… A gentleman would never reveal the details of his close encounters and intimate experiences with a lady, much less a Queen… Ahem.
I know it’s your birthday and all, but seriously, when is it our turn?
Come to think of it, why did he make you a confinement dish? Do you have a little secret you’d like to share?
Happy Bday to you !
you had mee suah for your birthday! i thought that’s more appropriate for the older people or for the sick.haha! emm, this had been the best meal you ever had not only because devil had made this with love, he has also added in 2 full cups of passion, a bucket full of care, a large dose of purity and a handful of comfort and cook that in a pot of joy..i suspect he might have also put in some of his secret ingredients..some admiration and some appreciation, that’s why you loved the mee so much.
@a lil’ fat monkey: When is it your turn? Uhm, on your birthday?
Kiddin’! Will probably be sooner than that… Probably…
And it’s not a confinement dish lah! Only the wine chicken with ginger is; the mee sua is meant for birthday boys and girls after all. Longevity, man, longevity! *faints*
@Chen Xing: Thank you!
@lena: I dunno, I love mee sua a lot actually, and can have it anytime. Devil cooked it partly cos it’s my birthday but also cos I enjoy it. (He’s not a big fan of mee sua himself, haha.)
And you know what? I think you might be right about all those extra ingredients… *winks*
Ya know, I had some pulled noodles in Sg on your birthday too! Long, lustrous and refine, pretty good stuff. Of course, it was nothing compared to homecooked mee sua la. What dialect is the Devil (as in your Devil) ar? Cos I think different clans got different birthday customs. Being 0.5 Hakka, I have to eat 2 hard-boiled eggs on my birthday. no mee sua lor. hehe.
@Black TIES White Lie: Really? Then may I consider that you had them on my behalf? (I know, I know, so perasan only… Hehe.)
Devil’s Hokkien. I’m Cantonese. I think the only birthday custom we have in common is to eat good food! Eat, eat, eat! Hehe.
Awww, that’s sweet. Many happy returns, seeing how one can’t simply spam your wall ;)
@Janvier: Haha, you’re not the first to have tried! Unfortunately I’ve disabled the wall… so most left comments on the links or sent direct messages or came here, to my blog.
However you guys found your way, let me say I truly appreciate it – the sentiment and the well wishes. Thank you, very much.
Happy Birthday Kenny!
Finally seeing the bowl of mee sua… indeed hearty, prepared with plenty of ingredients and love by ck.
@ck lam: Thanks, dear! And I can’t help but wish that I could have a bowl of that birthday mee sua every day! (But it wouldn’t be as special if I did, ya?)
oh u lucky Devil… :)
on a side note… reminds self to not read ur blog unless my tummy is filled… >.<
@asstha: Ah, but if your tummy is full, my blog may well be less enjoyable… a bit of craving goes a long way here, hehe.
