The Fierce Urgency of Now

Martin Luther King, Jr. —

.

We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood — it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, “Too late.”

  • guilty! :(

  • Hence, I’m quitting my job as of Mac…

I don’t want to live a life full of regrets but one filled with no regrets and wonderful memories.

    *HUGS*

  • @babe_kl: Me too! But now is always the best time to change that!

@jemima: Amazing. What a brave step forward! May your new path bring you nothing but joy and happiness!

    *HUGS*

  • argh, such a sober reminder this morning, of how time does slip away.

i was watching the new season of ‘american idol,’ and some of those who auditioned this year were 15 years old. and i realized that i’m now closer in age to any 50-year-old than to those 15-year-olds. bah.

strangely though, after reading this, instead of having mlk jr’s voice ringing in my head, i have michael learns to rock haunting me. 25 minutes too lateeee…

  • Let’s fill all our nows with happiness (and good food)! :)

  • @Sean: I dunno. Isn’t it an achievement to be closer in age to 50 rather than 15? And the experiences and wisdom we gained along the way – is that not of immense value?

Even our mistakes and our failures, they carve away at us, sculpting and moulding us to be better people. We grow and we grow up, as they say, at least for those of us who are fortunate enough to keep learning and listening for more, for what else is out there.

Then again, you listen to Michael Learns To Rock (shudders). I may have rethink the very credibility of the evidence for your sanity. Be well, my friend…

  • @J the chocoholic: Indeed. In fact, I wish right NOW I am having lunch and not having to babysit the cleaners in our apartment…

Oh what to have for lunch today? This sexy, saucy Satyrday… Hmm…

  • can almost associate the two words, ‘regret’ and ‘too late’ ..geesh..no turning back..life is always now..

not fond of MLTR? how about johnny hates jazz…” i wish that i could turn back the clock, bring the wheels of time to a stop…”

  • @gfad: Wow. That sure is some fierce urgency. *chuckles*

@lena: Hahaha… Between you and Sean, I swear the entire early 90′s pop music archives is gonna come tumbling down on me…

And such a perfect sentiment — life is always now, indeed.

  • i’ve just finished reading a few of your ‘inspire’ stories..are you still able to chk the comments there?

  • @lena: Oh yes, I view all incoming comments and have to approve them before they appear. So, yes. And thanks for reading the older stories!

P.S. Some of the older posts use nesting/threaded comments, which this current blog template does not support, so you may have to search for your comment and my reply in the middle of the comments. Apologies for the mess.

P.P.S. A link to my reply here (and your comment, just above it).

  • good. doesnt matter if it’s old or new..stories never die.

  • @lena: I can’t agree more. Stories may go on forever so long as we keep telling them. And when we go, may someone else take over and tell them for us. And on and on.

Oh, and lookee at the postscripts above for your convenience. Yay!

  • thanks, i got that. The reason i asked you that is because just yesterday, a friend was talking about this in a documentary film. There is this girl, a great violinist, somehow met with a fatal accident and died, her heart was given to a recipient who was in need of that. Months later after the heart transplant, the recipient who has got no music interest at all, started to hum songs and he’s doing that all the time which he finds it unexplainable..later they found out that all those songs were actually the songs that the girls favours to play when she was alive.

  • @lena: I hope that story is true. I really do. For it will be consoling to know something of us survives after us.

Yet even if it is not, I guess I believe we still survive in one form or another. My grandfather survives in me, the stories that he has shared. His love of books passed on to me. Life is about continuing, not endings.

  • just hope that nobody will get a heart that’s made of stone, you know what i mean?

i read a book not too long ago,’ talking to heaven’ by james van praagh, a medium..quite interesting though. He has this psychic abilities to see and talk to spirits and he has done thousands and thousands readings for people whom has lost their loved ones. In the book, he has given many many stories about those who has passed on and yet they are still very alive around us, they do come back and watch us like our angels and also very alive in their own world. They still got work to do..even for pets, it’s the same. They have pet care takers and child care takers who do look after those ‘children’ well, i’m not saying that i believe 100% what he wrote there but it’s interesting to know. It’s also in youtube some of his live readings but there are some critics too.

  • @lena: I don’t really think anybody gets a heart made of stone. If there’s one to be made, we tend to be the ones making them, ourselves. Which is why the present is so important. There is nothing else, really.

  • oi, how come we’re not waking up to a new LFB entry today, unlike every other day so far in 2011? just cos it’s your birthday doesn’t mean you can take a day off, y’know. hmmmmmm, or does it? :P

many happy returns of the day! the sun is out this morning, shining at full strength for you :D

p.s. can set your gps to mont kiara for tomorrow ar?

  • @Sean: Nope, one does agree – just because it’s my birthday, don’t mean I don’t gotta post a new entry, indeed.

Thing is, yesterday was spent in a glorious storm of relaxing and eating and simply basking in the company of my dearest… the stuff of legend and possibly future posts.

Also I had to help the Devil photoshop pictures for HIS post about my surprise birthday party… so much so I was left with little time to write my own post.

(Which is what I’m doing right now, and on my birthday, no less. Cis.)

So in the meanwhile, let me direct you to Devil’s post – ‘Surprise Birthday Party?‘ – pretty pics and easy reading if you use Google Translate.

Thank you for the well wishes. The sun’s a right chum today, ain’t he though? Yay.

P.S. For you, mate? Can lah…

  • i have indeed google translated the post, and am mystified as always, due to sentences like this: “happy birthday oh, little horse, but also a year older, and give birth to be good, know.” :P

p.s. yay! a mystery cuisine at a family-run outlet awaits us. a cuisine that is (almost) as rare as koala bears in kl (and no, that’s not a hint that it’s australian. far from it, in fact). i’ll say no more for now, except … bring your appetite. :D

  • @Sean: Using the Kenny Translator, we get: “Happy Birthday, Young Master Mah! Now that you are a year older, you gotta be good, okay?”

P.S. Then it’s quite safe for the Devil then; cos he only avoids Indian cuisine and that is far from rare in our cosmopolitan city, aye?

  • ‘young master mah’ became ‘oh little horse.’ i suppose google translate doesn’t do well with chinese names. interestingly then, both our surnames refer to majestic animals. mine means ‘bear’ :D

p.s. yep, i avoid indian too, since it throws my tummy into turmoil. mercifully, what i’m thinking of probably doesn’t contain anything spicier than, ermmm, beetroot :D

  • @Sean: Sean the Bear? But I doubt this bear likes cubs… I’m guessing your taste runs more to twinks? Hehe.

P.S. Oh the Devil can take it hot and spicy (the Devil ma). The poor sod just can’t differentiate one curry from the other cos he claims they all look the same. Lousy fella.

  • It took me a couple of lost chances (I think!) before I realised the importance of knowing how to make up my mind. But hey, I’m a Libran, and Librans are known for their indecisiveness. (I know, I know, there’s a new zodiac now, but once a Libran, always a Libran!)

You remember though, we both pledged(?) to make this year the Year of Taking Charge. Yes? =)

  • @Michelle: There’s a new zodiac now? Whatever took over Libra the Scales? (I sure hope nothing took over Aquarius the Water Bearer – that’s my sign!)

But oh yes, this will be the Year of Taking Charge. Full charge ahead!!

  • Nothing “took over” Libra (NEVAH!!), just that we now have 13 zodiacs instead of 12, apparently.

    Go check it out HERE.

  • @Michelle: Ophiuchus a.k.a. Serpentarius a.k.a. “the serpent-bearer”? And some of us are shifted now? No way – I’m sticking to Aquarius like a bee to honey!

  • Lol. I’m sticking to Libra too.

Well, it IS Year of Taking Charge. And we’ll take charge of our zodiacs if that’s the last thing we do!

  • @Michelle: Consider this Aquarian in Charge and Taking Charge. Yeehaw!!

  • Lols… sorry had to comment… happy belated birthday huns, hope u had a ball…

had to comment on how the Devil can’t differentiate between the different curries… i believe it’s all in the smell… worse come to worse, ask and you shall receive ;)

i had that urgency towards late last year… somehow it all dwindled away somewhere along the months… still trying to cope with the new job… outside entertainment seems to be something of luxury to me now… haven’t even finished spring cleaning my room for CNY n it’s next week… o.O

  • @asstha: Devil can’t differentiate the smells of the curries either, unfortunately. It’s all one and the same.

Ah well, there are other stuff he can eat, I guess.

And tell me about not finishing spring cleaning for CNY. Me too!
