The beautiful garden is empty

Flowers, leaves, woods

By Kenny Mah

The year is still so new but already the days feel shorter, as though time is running out. We rarely get to stay in one place for too long. Soon it will be time to move again.

Perhaps that makes it a good time to stock up on supplies I’d otherwise miss. I keep a scented list, filled with names of flowers, leaves and woods: ylang ylang, geranium, eucalyptus, sandalwood, lavender. Here’s a chance to replenish my hoard of tiny bottles, all dark brown glass and invisible oils within.

The apothecary has expanded. Outside are some tables for dining, laid amongst the ferns and the creeping shrubs. But no birds sing here, no stray felines prowl. No others but the two of us when you join me outside. The beautiful garden is empty.
