Stronger

We can do more than we realise

By Kenny Mah

We can misjudge our own strength sometimes.

The older I get, the more aware I become of my body. Bad posture could cause lower back pain. Sleeping late or staring at the flickering screens of my devices could have me moving like a zombie the next morning.

Sugar, a heavy dose of it in a sweet treat, just makes me feel ill.

Yet I don’t feel like my body is falling apart as I age. At least when I listen to reason, when I listen to my gut telling what works and what doesn’t.

So I make sure I get enough sleep and I have my morning ritual. A walk in the garden, taking in the natural sights and sounds. The green of the palm leaves above my head, the scent of the spider lilies. Grinding coffee beans and brewing my first – and often only – cuppa of the day.

Moderation is key, I remind myself.

I train three times a week, with my kettlebells. I try to grease the groove, as Pavel Tsatsouline advises, with my bodyweight exercises like pull-ups and push-ups. I wash my car rather than pay someone else to do it, and go for a run after I’m done.

Time becomes clearer as a precious resource, you see.

And through it all, I feel that I’m getting stronger. Ageing doesn’t have to be a slow slide into weakness and frailty. We can do more than we realise.

Let us not underestimate our strength and our resolve to get stronger still.
